Re: BLACK BOTTOM PAINT MAKES CABIN HOT??

A few boats ago someone talked me into red bottom paint over the existing blue because then I'd know when the red was worn off because the original blue would show through. Besides, red looks really really cool, right? Only problem was that I am colorblind and, when diving the hull in turbid water, I couldn't tell what section (red) I'd already cleaned and what sections (green) still needed a scrub. And, of course, the first areas where the red wore off and the blue showed through were at the waterline. Can't tell you how good that looked, but everyone who saw it pretty much knew the owner of my boat was colorblind.

Bottom paint other than red is a fashion statement.

Re: BLACK BOTTOM PAINT MAKES CABIN HOT??

I have had Blue and now it is Black next painting this summer will depend on which $200/ gal paint has a deal. I have not noticed any benefit for cabin heat in the PNW with black. Sounds like the marine store ordered too much black.

Hull, other than white, is a fashion statement.
I like yours.

When you're done buying that bridge mentioned earlier - I have some swamp land i Florida I'd like to sell you (no alligators - HONEST!)

My bottom paint is copper-colored - beat that!

Our books have gotten 5 star reviews on Amazon. Several readers have written "I never thought I would go on a circumnavigation, but when I read these books, I was right there in the cockpit with Vinni and Carsten"

In the immortal words of Mick Jagger, paint it black. Yes the boat looks thinner and faster.

Re: BLACK BOTTOM PAINT MAKES CABIN HOT??

On the practical side, black paint is more difficult to see what's going on in water with poor visibility like the Chesapeake. When I dive under, I need a good dive light and even with that, it can be hard to see.

I've never noticed a temperature difference......the water is a huge heat sink so I don't see how paint color could affect the interior temps unless you're healed way over for a long period, but if that's the case, then you're likely in moderate wave condition and you would have waves cooling the side back down......

Are you sure he didn't mean "don't paint the topsides black". That would make a difference from what I understand.

Haven't had a heat problem having a dark-colored hull. The surface is vertical and the interior is insulated.

Looks like a well designed/built boat ... one more score for COOT ...

I hate to change the point of this thread but I have to ask. We are learning to sail. My son is also color blind. How do you deal with things like green red buoys? Or what about night lights telling which way a boat is heading when you encounter them?

A black bottom can be an asset... It can really accentuate the curves, just sayin.

Especially on a boat! I understand that in the Pacific Northwest, a black bottom greatly increases the chances of mating with whales.
