Boat Repeatedly For Sale

I am 3 years away from buying a boat, so this is just a curiosity/educational question. There is a 1980 Sparkman & Stevens Custom Ketch in Florida that has been for sale off and on (or maybe by different owners) several times for the past few years. Great interior in the photos (I know that doesn't always mean reality) and wondered why a boat would be reselling that quickly or listing repeatedly over time.

Again, not buying for 2-3 years, but trying to learn before then.

Re: Boat repeatedly for sale

The response that immediately jumps to mind is:
a) it's Florida and there are a lotta boats for sale in FL
b) Same owner and hasn't been able to sell this particular boat because
> It's priced too high
> It has "problems"

If you're interested/curious, suggest you ask the owner why.

Heck there are still boats listed that I saw when I first started thinking of getting into sailing, so 7 years now! Yet a lot of them looked great in the pictures compared to the price. So the answer is .......... the pictures lie!

People who really want to sell their boats; do! Those that think they want to if the price matches their fantasy: don't!

Re: Boat repeatedly for sale

Don Lucas is correct. There is a boat near my home port that has been for sale by the same owner for about 4 yrs now. He thinks its worth a small fortune, and most folks who would want a boat that size know its not worth the price of a decent boat engine.

Re: Boat repeatedly for sale

There are some tax advantages and legal advantages to having a boat nominally for sale or rent. I don't really understand it, but that's what my accountant said. It could be that he is trying to take advantage of this loophole somehow.

Re: Boat repeatedly for sale

I was the third buyer of the yacht that I eventually bought on eBay. The previous two didn't front with the cash and messed the seller around for months.

Re: Boat repeatedly for sale

A common reason might be is that the wife wants the boat sold, the husband feels he has to agree with her for what ever reason but he does not really want to get rid of the boat so he says to her "you really do not want to sell it for less than we have in it do you". The boat is for sale and priced by the wife but it is really for sail by the husband. Pretty smart or him. I hope this made sense.

Re: Boat repeatedly for sale

Guess I wasn't thinking much when I asked the question. As many different reasons as boats are for sale.

Re: Boat repeatedly for sale

IMO, if it has been with several brokers or even through one broker, the boat probably has issues, if it's a for sale by owner, the price is too high. Why they want to sell, motivation, may be a factor, but if it has been on the market for any signifcant time, exposure to the market, and it has not sold, it's the price. At the right price anything should sell. Good deals don't last.

Re: Boat repeatedly for sale

I have bought a boat and an RV in the last year, extensive research on what was available,

Lots of great piccys and even a few Video's.
But I did notice that some piccys had two different boat or RV fittings inside,

So what is going on here, Dubious to say the least,
Putting in a piccy of a better quality Boat or RV in the group of piccys of one your trying to sell,
People arent stupid, They can see the difference in the piccys, So what ever you have, It wont sell, Your cheating or hiding some thing,

So they are not even worth looking at, These are the ones for sale for years,
