Kittery Maine - 32' steel hull sloop $6K

I saw this pop up on local craigslist

https://nh.craigslist.org/boa/d/kitt...000887923.html

Sturdy Dutch Steel Sloop 1970 with colorful history Yanmar Diesel, dual forestays and backstays, wooden spars, sails, sail cover, boom awning, 45lb CQR ,Aires windvane, Avon inflatable. Cozy interior with great layout for cruising. Needs a bit of paint, welding and loving care. Last survey valued at $20,000 will consider low offers from the right new owner.

Wandelaar was built in Holland in 1970. Her primary owner was editor of a Dutch sailing magazine VAREN. He sailed her all around Europe and wrote stories about his voyages. He sailed her from Spain to Barbados where a young couple purchased her for an around the world voyage. The male portion of the couple was a physicist with only one leg but wasn’t handicapped! He would throw a sail bag over his shoulder and shoot up the boatyard ladder. This couple sailed around the Caribbean for a year and discovered it was time to sell the boat when they realized they were going to become parents. I purchased Wandelaar in 1984 and have sailed from Norfolk VA to New Bern NC, and then I brought her up offshore to Newport RI and eventually to my own mooring in Kittery Maine. My wife and I have made multiple passages along the New England Coast and a passage to Nova Scotia.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

The CSY 33 for $25k is a very good deal.

‘course, I’m prejudiced

Still:
Chain plates changed in 2010
Fuel tanks refurbished 2010
Side cabin windows replaced in 2010
Hull Awlgrip paint done in 2015
New rudder and post 2015

I know how much that had to cost!

1982 Mirage 35, Toronto Canada, $30,000 (cdn)

I was reluctant to post this boat for sale, because I'm thinking of buying it myself. Comments and opinions invited. Should I buy it?

My online research tells me the M35 is actually the M33 with a reverse transom.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

A steel Tahitiana ketch for sale in Newfoundland (northern peninsula) for $25,000 Canadian (~$19K US).
https://www.kijiji.ca/v-sailboat/cor...ale/1378153511
The appears to be a well-equipped boat, with a 40hp Isuzu engine.
Big fuel tanks. Radar.
Good ground tackle (Rocna anchor). Solid fuel heater (Sardine).
Self-steering (Cape Horn). Composting head.

If you're after a steel boat to go North, this might be a candidate.

It's probably not going anywhere for a wee while, though!

^^^^^ I know that boat, been on it.

It was owned by a Britsh chap, Dennison Berwick. I can give some scant details if anyone is interested.

I think it will go for less than the asking price due to location if nothing else.

The foil is being intentionally stored that way. I have no idea why, perhaps it does not have an extrusion?

Pictures were mid June 2019.

Nice little boat, Dennison put a lot of love into it.

WOW...absolutely WOW. If it were closer to home (I'm in Kingston, Lake Ontario) I would be all over that beauty. That is an awesome boat.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Regarding the steel tahitian ketch above I met it and the owner in 2012. Nice gentleman, adventure travel writer who live abroad in the winter. IIRC he was trying to duplicate some earlier trek for the purpose of writing a book about it. That involved going North into Labrador.

He had some issue with the transmission/engine that kept him grounded for a couple of seasons. He eventually got it sorted out and went up into Labrador but got socked in by some seriously nasty weather. Took a lot for him to get back, the following season I believe. I am told he then later decided on another trip but experienced a engine/transmission failure and with that quickly sold the boat and left. In 2012 we sat in the boat having tea and fresh biscuits with him telling how frustrating the long repairs had been. It can take forever to get stuff in that location. We laughed that if you have not sat in your cockpit and cried of frustration then you haven’t been cruising.

The boat is well kitted out for travel in northern waters, hence the 5 anchors and all that extra rope. I seem to recall there being more to it than that and thinking he spent as much on the accessories as he did on the hull.

It is a small boat for the LOD. There is not much of a cockpit. But is has very adequate headroom, rare in a small boat. The scantlings (3/16”) are more than adequate for a boat this size.

At the the current exchange rate that price is $19,000 USD.

If you were to buy it the thing to do would be to sail it down to Lewisporte, either coastal hopping or an overnight voyage. Lewisporte, my home port, is a vastly superior place for a boat with many more services available and just about the best club house you can imagine, for very affordable rates.

I already have a Steel 33’er so I don’t need another, no matter how enticing.

I agree, very tempting and a lot more of a boat than the overpriced Mirage...
