Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Surfing yesterday I noticed a HR Monsun at 12k on sailing texas and a Nicholson 35 at 20k on yachtworld. Both nice boats but clearly in need of tlc to make them yours.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Hinckley 38

Notworthy: New Engine, 1 Owner Boat
Asking Price (Oct 2016) $25,000

Location: Glen Cove, NY

I looked at the photos via the link below. Some of the photos were uploaded in fall of 2015, so that makes me think this boat has been on the market for a year at least. Some photos (engine) are from fall 2016. There are many photos of details via the link. I looked at them all.

My opinion?
The boat looks nice from the outside because of the new Awlgrip paint. Some of the interior looks nice (sole, settee wood). Some of the photos show the boat really needs some cosmetic TLC. It is certainly not "Bristol" condition. Some of the hardware on deck and in cockpit and in the interior looks old/original (and simply unclean or some corrosion), and may need to be cleaned, refinished, or replaced. I suspect the wiring may need to be replaced too, but the panel looks newer. But, who knows? As with any boat, a thorough survey is important. I have NO connection to this or any boat I post.

The following is from the sale listing on craigs list.

Cal 40 1965

Asking Price = $17,000 "negotiable"
Location = Long Island NY

My Opinion:
This boat surprised me when I looked at the photos, because it appears from the few photos that the owner has cleaned it up inside. While there are limited photos, what I saw looked better than most boats I view that are at this price point and better than most boats this age. Worth a look, so I am posting it. I have NO connection to this boat or seller.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

1969 Hinckley being sold by her original owner, 47 years of ownership. That is very, very, very rare. Little surprise she needs a bit of updating. she and her owner have grown old together. The seller is probably in his 80 to 90's now. I would wager a beverage or two that the owner is as much "interviewing" new owners, as he is attempting to sell her. Something along the lines of wanting to to find a worthy person to care for & enjoy his boat. These things to happen, but are rare. Again, if I were 1/2 way in the market for another boat, this would be at the top of my list & I would be in Long Island now. Just my opinion. If my hunch is right, I hope the owner finds someone worthy to pass her along to.

I do not remember those lodging knees forward as being standard on a Cal 40. Someone has done some logical strengthening to that boat.

Interior looks like it might be all original, including cushions! I'd probably leave it that way just for the nostalgia of it!

Old Frog,
Interesting observations on both boats. Thanks for adding your comments to the mix.
I agree about the One Owner 47 Years point. That is rare.

Sheesh, pretty clean Cal 40! I guess the gas engine will turn away some, and yes it does need new sails and rigging, but if that boat were on the west coast I bet it would sell in a heartbeat.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

I like to use the recent sale listings to ILLUSTRATE what types of boats may be considered within this price point (Less Than $30K). So, I look for the photos of the boat that is currently for sale, and add other photos to show that TYPE or MODEL of boat and drawings to illustrate that type of boat.

These photos are of different CAL 40 boats I have seen in the past. These photos are NOT of the boat I posted earlier, but I intended to add them to that posting but my upload got timed out.

Note that the Cal 40 was first produced in 1963! Look at that hull shape and the design under the water (keel and rudder). The CAL 40 had an enviable reputation back then for being a fast boat and some of the photos show her nice lines in action. I hope you enjoy seeing them.

I saw the link for shutterfly "Sell your boat on shutterfly" and clicked that link.
Try THIS link:
https://sellyourboatnow.shutterfly.com/17773

I only posted the BEST photos here on CF that look nice.

The Shutterfly listing has MANY more that show the details of condition (some water stains in interior, dirty areas, some corrosion, questionable wood trim condition etc.). That is why I asked.
