Yep, and if you're prepared to cleanup and repair, you can get a good deal. We bought our boat in 2009 and have replaced everything except the engine, spars and sails (which would have been dealbreakers if they hadn't been new).

It was a steal, apart from the 10 years of our lives...lol

Prices in Ontario and Quebec are usually lower than on the British Columbia side of Canada. Eastern Canada prices are often lower still.

British boats (such as Westerlys) sell for relatively modest prices.

Part of the whole buying an old boat must be that you enjoy fixing it up

I'd want a decent engine ,sails and mast , the rigging ,electrics ,nav gear and fiberglass work would not phase me ,I'll make a decision on boat size closer to my retirement , I'd be happy with a 30 to 32 ft ,but my kids want to visit ( so they say ) a d I'd need a 36 to 38 ,but as we all know the running costs to up on larger boats

I'd say the best website for finding boat in Canada (if you're interested) is Kijiji.
(Select Cars and vehicles/Boats and Watercraft/Sailboats and you can limit the geographic range or put in "Canada" to the location).

Like northern Europe, boats often only get used here for 6 months per year and the Great Lakes are all fresh water.

Actually, it just needs a light soda blasting.

The hardest thing about surveying this boat will be scraping the gunk out of the bilge to verify that pinholes are not present... all 50-odd feet of the bilge.

Thank you sir, just what I needed, a blast of reality. Please guys, if it ever looks like I'm wavering, throw a bucket of cold sea water on me!

The best sailing in Ontario, imo, is in Georgian Bay, part of Lake Huron. The "30 Thousand Lakes" and the North Channel of Manitoulin Island. Big yachting centre in Penetanguishene.

I live and cruise in the Thousand Islands area of Lake Ontario. It's interesting, scenic and historic but really busy in July/August. Main town is Kingston.

All these areas have a good range of decent-sized boats, more in the large population centres like Toronto and Montreal.

If you are familiar with Active Captain, you'll get a lot of advice on cruising, if you're interested.

In normal times, there are canals to take you South via the US East Coast. (Going down the St. Lawrence is the long way around.)

43 Shannon Cutter (Hampstead, NC.)

I'm guessing that the seller wants way more than the ~$3K that the boat is worth since he's afraid to list a price.

Looks like a balsa cored hull...no thanx! Especially now that it has been compromised.

There's a reason it's on the hard (and looks to have been on the hard for quite some time)

Or look at the West Coast of British Columbia. Sailing year round and no freeze/thaw cycles. Some of the best cruising in the world.
