Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

I have been surprised at the asking price for 1984-ish Freedom32's. Many are Great Lake boats and below $30,000. I just listed mine for $25000. It is on yacht world and is in Marinette, Wisconsin. It is listed on the Nestegg marine. com site. New sail/wheel covers as of this week. New bilge pump this winter. New jib and batteries last year. New cushions the year before. Stored in doors. These are great, inexpensive due to age and well built by TPI. I have single handed mine all over northern Lake Michigan. A great boat for a small family or husband and wife.

Howdy!

Since the boat you mention you own is a Freedom 32 with a free standing mast (FSM), I invite you to write up something about how that boat sails, describing it in detail (about sailing one, owning one, likes/dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, quirks), and then post your comment about that MODEL of boat in the following thread.

IF you want to include some (1-12) photos, along with a link to more photos of it (e.g. Yachtworld listing link) go ahead, if you write something about the type, features, etc.

That thread is about the types of boats that have Free Standing Masts. So, the more you can tell us readers about your experience with the boat, the better. The readers of that thread have a special interest in boats with FSM.

Re: Boats Less Than $30K Recent Noteworthy Finds

Columbia 45 Motor Sailor

Asking Price = $19,900
Location = Southern California (San Diego)

Why this boat?
I am posting this boat because I have not yet posted an example of this boat type in this thread.

Also because I often see that CF Members are looking for an inexpensive liveaboard boat, preferably one with an aft cabin double berth and a shower. This boat has that and more, and it may fit someone's needs.

As with any boat that is advertised, you would be wise to have a professional yacht surveyor look at the boat for you.
_________

Sistership Walkthrough Video Tour
https://youtu.be/zG7SUSvOkBg
This is a good tour through a sistership, showing the size and features of this model of boat. Good views of the Pilot House (saloon) galley, Vberth, and especially the Aft Cabin double (queen) berth with private head and separate shower.
_________

The following is from a quick view of the photos in the sale listing (posted 16 days ago). You should look for yourself to confirm. There are more photos on the sale listing.

This is a large boat at a low price. Looks good for a liveaboard.

This is what I noticed in the photos:
Pilot house
85hp Diesel engine Perkins 4-108
Wind vane
Davits
Solar Panel
Windlass.
Hoist on stern pulpit.
Roller Furling Jib
Aft Cabin looks like a large berth.
Two heads (?), one with separate shower.
Nice galley and dinette area.

I would add a settee in the Pilot House with built-in storage for an Engle type freezer. It appears it may have been set up for inside helm at one time.

___________

CAVEAT EMPTOR!
This boat is 45 feet and older and that means it will cost something to update, refit, repair, maintain, etc.

From the sale description, there is no mention of sails or deck hardware or issues or engine condition.

Asking = $19,900

That appears to be a "pretend" pilothouse on the Columbia 45.

I've talked to that guy a few times! He's been dropping the price. I told him to clean it up and I'd sell it for him. Guess he would rather lose $2k than put an afternoon of sweat equity in.

On a side note these guys seem to be doing the affordable cruisers right... I might have some bias:

Caution, a few are slightly over $30k. Alert the police!

Yes, I can see how one could call it a "pretend pilot house." But, "pretend depends" on how you define something.

Some boats have designs that cross over definitions.

In this case (Columbia 45) it is described as a "motor sailor."

I can see how someone would look at the salon and those large windows (portlights) and call it a "deck saloon" style boat.

It does have a raised salon, with what appears to be good forward visibility from inside.

Today a remote autopilot control could be used, rather than having to have a mechanical helm and wheel inside. Engine controls and instruments would be another thing to consider.

Morgan 35.. the pic from the rear really shows off the wide decks without shrouds stuck in the middle.. i'm sure that's a whole other thread...

$23,900
As of this past Saturday this boat was available. It's a 25' Catalina and very nice. As I am still new, I cannot answer any technical questions but I can tell you, If I was solo, I would look hard at this one!

As of Saturday this boat was still available. 30' 1983 Ericson What I loved about this boat was the push through trash can, the trash is actually on deck under lazarette with the push through in the galley. Maybe all Ericsson's are like this but this was my first time one one. Smelled like an older boat but super clean and met the owners, super nice and very willing to talk about their first love. They are moving on to a bigger boat. Since I am new at all of this, I cannot answer any technical questions, just wanted to pass along the info to anyone interested. Not sure why first pic is posting sideways, posted upright in preview.
