Bought a boat and have been busy!

I bought a boat that I found from a member of this forum, a beautiful Shannon 38 (thank you Captain Bruce!), and have been so busy that I haven't looked at this forum for months! I've been using Facebook forums for a lot of information, but it's good to be reminded of this one again.

Re: Bought a boat and have been busy!

I have yet to figure out how to post photos on this forum. The button wants me to insert a link of some sort, which is beyond my computer abilities. But I have some beautiful photos!

Re: Bought a boat and have been busy!

Looking forward to hearing about your coming sailing season. Lake Superior was my cruising grounds for a decade. Most of my time was spent on the Canadian shores (north and east), although I did spend a little down in the Apostles and a bit on the west.

Grand cruising grounds. If it wasn't for the winter, I'd have likely never left.

Thank you. I'm looking forward to spending the summer getting to know my boat better. So far I've done most of my sailing in the Apostle Islands, which are beautiful. I'm going to explore Isle Royale, but Canada probably won't be open next summer, and this will be my last year on Superior. As with you, winter is a deal breaker. I'm leaving in August to make my way to first the Florida Keys, and then spend a year or three exploring the Caribbean. This will be the last year my boat spends the winter on the hard.

Yes, it does seem unlikely the border will open in time for next season. Ah well... Isle Royale looks great, although I must admit I never explored its shores. We always traveled with animals (cat/dog), and they don't allow that. Did sail through the waters a number of times on various west-east crossings. Stunning!

Have a great time. You've got an amazing boat, and a great plan. I may make it down where you're headed eventually. But I want to spend a few more years in Newfoundland and area first. After that, then perhaps south.

Hello, DarwinHolstrom,

We'd love to see your pictures. Perhaps this will help: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...st-133457.html

Good luck with it.

Congrats on your new boat, and your future escape from the Great Lakes!

We do miss the fresh water, but not the cold

Re: Bought a boat and have been busy!

I hear you. This was going to be our lst summer on the Great Lakes and we wanted to get to Georgian Bay and the North Channel before heading south next year. I sure hope the border opens up for at least us careful cruisers.

I hope so too. Things are getting crazy and logic doesn't seem to play much of a role in the decision making. Who knows what things will be like in the Caribbean next year but I'm at least going to make it to Florida next year so I don't have to spend another winter with Sarah Belle on the hard.
