I agree

Re: Buying A 20 year old Bavaria 44...good idea?

Get a good survey done, focusing on issues that Bavarias may be prone to.

But don't shy away due to her age. In 2002 I bought my 42 foot epoxy saturated wood sloop, Jipcho, built in New Zealand in 1975. I lived on her and sailed her around the world (never found the edge) during the next 15 years, and sold her back in her home of New Zealand to a Kiwi sailor that recognizes quality and endurance. As an older vessel, I of course had to do plenty of repair an maintenance along the way, but that's true of newer vessels as well, especially the more cheaply built modern yachts that are used for charter.
Good luck, and enjoy the oceans!

Have worked on a number of Bavs ,the older ones were heavily built rudder and rudder bearings problems were common ,but fixable, check for water in rudder blade ,can leed to serious problems and cost ,also check tanks and keel bolts plus mast step, keel bolts at 20 yrs plus ,a must check inem, good luck .⛵️⚓️

Captain Abo Bavaria's biggest fault is the 1970's mission brown gelcoat in the bilge. Admittedly it hides the dirt, but what a colour choice.

Absolutely, was trying to figure out what stained the bilge that way. Looks weird!

As far as I remember a 1987 Bavaria the bilge was coated with a pale-to mid brown paint.

Re: Buying A 20 year old Bavaria 44...good idea?

I was a part owner of a Bavaria 44 for 15 years and it was and still is a great yacht.
The rudder issue occurs on most yachts at some stage and is easily fixed with the replacement of new upper and lower bearings when it is next hauled out for an antifoul .
You should enjoy sailing it as they sail very well, have a good solid hull and are cheap to maintain.
Enjoy!

There is a reason some of those old boats are so cheap!!

Look at older Tartans, and Sabres or Jeanneau or Catalinas
they dont have rudder post issues , some have a swelling of the ball , easily fixed

and easily changed if you are so inclined , these are not things that are major , dont let this type of stuff influence your purchase , its like rejecting teh boat cause you didnt like the colour of the carpet

Many APs are connected to the steering system and an AP should nopt be connected to a quadrant , it should have its own tiller arm
