Buying a Beneteau Oceanis 510

My wife and I are going to look at an Oceanis 510 for sale this weekend. Our purpose for purchase would be to refit her for coastal cruising and island hopping in the Caribbean.

Wondering what to look for in this current generation of Beneteau and the 510 specifically? I have seen a few bits and bobs here and there on the forums, but none too specific to the 50'er.

Re: Buying a Beneteau Oceanis 510

Colin,

Be careful of the deep draft of this boat. If you are thinking of gunkholing in small places on the east coast and maybe doing the ICW you should be wary of a deep draft vessel. Off shore no prob but six feet or less gets you into small fun places.

Cheers

Re: Buying a Beneteau Oceanis 510

You should be skilled to handle 50 as it's big and heavy. While it helps to have the thruster, you really need to know how to control it at low speeds. It's also at the size where your wife should be ready to help with basic actions during docking, anchoring, mooring, etc.

It's somewhat complex and expensive to maintain. While new boats mean new parts, it doesn't mean it will be without issues.

If this is your first one, i would strongly suggest looking at something smaller.
