Buying S&S 34

Hi guys,

I’m seriously considering buying an s&s 34 have already put in an offer.

50 k AUD is my current offer ( subject to survey and rigging report). I know if I up it to 55 k I’ll get it.

Seller has it advertised for 65k but I have it on good knowledge he will take 55k. The broker says they have another buyer flying down in 2 days to look at it as well.

It’s a great boat really well looked after.

It also had a brand new 30hp engine put in last yr only 20 hrs. That’s 10k there.Click image for larger version

Thoughts please , think I will up my bid to secure the boat. These are very famous and seaworthy yachts.

Thanks everyone.

Welcome aboard CF, it sounds to me that you know your answer

A couple of points:

The other buyer is usually mythical! As well, I never make a decision of what I buy as being dependent on what some else might or might not do.

The new engine - unless it was the exact same model as the old one or some cheap Chinese engine or a rebuilt engine - it is probably worth way more than $10K. A new 30Hp marine diesel in Oz is a lot more than $10K. And most replacement engines need new mounts / beds, reworked exhaust system, fuel delivery, controls etc. The installation could easily chew up $5K.

So if it a new engine of reputable make (Yanmar, Beta, Nani etc), then there is probably $20K in the engine alone. However it is a doubtful rebuild or some no name engine, then maybe it is worth almost nothing.

My 2 cents...

It’s a westerbeke made in USA quite well known and has a 5 yr warranty.

Installed by proper mechanics has all receipts.

Re: Buying S&S 34

I would stay with your offer, even if there is another buyer, there is no guarantee he will go higher, and I agree with the earlier post there probably isn't.
boats are like trains if you miss one there is always another that comes along.
Great choice of boat, good luck and I hope you get to keep the 5 grand to spend on new toys for it.

Well I'm impressed - a new 30 Hp Weterbeke installed for $10K!

While I have no reason to doubt you, you have asked for thoughts and my thought is "it seems to be too good to be true".

Presumably we are talking Oz prices (supply & install).

Re: Buying S&S 34

FWIW, Sundance Marine's data sheet suggest the engine is a Westerbeke 30C (they state it's a C30 - 28 hp).

Assuming it is a new 30C, Westerbeke rates the engine as 25 hp.

Congratulations
I hope the survey and rigging report goes well for you.

Always liked the S&S 34 and this one looks good on paper.

Westerbeke makes a decent engine. They are, after all, just marinized Mitsubishi diesels. The big issue with Westies is the cost of the parts, but you shouldn't have to worry about that for a few years.

Great boat. The most famous is probably Morning Cloud which, under the ownership of British Prime Minister, Ted Heath, won the 1969 Sydney Hobart. I did a few races on Morning Tide in Antigua, late 70’s.
