Re: C&c30 mk1 stuffing box

What a mess! First, it appears that the hose is not clamped to the stuffing box at all. Is the box rotating with the coupler? I also wonder if that is proper stuffing box hose. In any event, to get adequate clearance between the box and the coupler you might be able to change to a positive shaft seal and/or replace the coupler with a short style split coupler. Otherwise the engine needs to come forward.

Additional thought, can’t tell from the photo but it might be possible to shorten the shaft log and move the box aft.

Re: C&c30 mk1 stuffing box

The atomic 4 sure doesn’t like diesel.
It would love to have it’s spark plugs out and barrels oiled before you turn in over by hand.
The float bowels and fuel pump are huge suspects for trouble, from resin. Some decent wires, rotor seems to be something they need. Replace the thermostat even if it looks perfect.
They are great torquey motors for Gas.
Sweet boat I hope you enjoy it soon but I know your enjoying getting it ready.

Re: C&c30 mk1 stuffing box

Congratulations on the boat! Be sure to visit the C&C Facebook group--it's outstanding.

As for the engine--I hate to be 'that guy,' but any chance you have the $$$ for a diesel repower?

I purchased a C&C 30 Mk I that had been left in storage for 14 years; and even during the height of the Covid boat-buying madness, that one sat unsold because it was advertised as having an Atomic 4. (It turned out to have a diesel. Otherwise, it'd still be buried under dust.) Yes, I know many Atomic 4 owners love them; yes, I know they work great when they work; yes, I know Moyer Marine is an Atomic 4 meccha; yes, I know that diesel repowers are very expensive. But the writing's on the wall for the Atomic 4, so if you're refitting a boat and keeping the original Atomic 4, it's not exactly a future-proofing sort of refit.

Re: C&c30 mk1 stuffing box

While repowering is a good point there’s rigging bottom bearings to worry about.
There is nothing wonderful about adding diesel but not much wonder in Atomic either. Lots of C&C has gas outboards. No idea how well that works with a tiller.
That said diesels are more expensive to restore by backyard mechanics then replace. But fuel tanks hoses etc...
you can spend 10x what you paid for it. The atomic will get you in and out.

Re: C&c30 mk1 stuffing box

The atomic 4 will stay, it runs great , and was replaced about 10 years ago
I’m just going through my boat inch by inch, cleaning , repairing and learning.
I shake my head at some of the repairs that have been done over the years and sigh at the lack of maintenance to some areas
Slowly but surely I’ll bring her back to life and have some fun
Cleaned the v-berth today
