I’ve attached a photo of the transmission mount that I need to replace. As you can see the mount and especially the transmission bracket that mount attaches to are badly rusted . The other mount, btw, looks great.

I replaced all 4 mounts while I was in Marathon maybe 20 years ago. All I did was take one out and show it to them and they order it for me. I can’t remember the cost or name as when I sold the boat, about 3 big 4” binders went with the sale along all the documented repairs. Sorry.
I can tell you that if all the monohull do owned, this was a sweet ride and made for very tall people.

Yes, a pic can be worth pages of thread.
It appears that your mounts may be of the "DF" series.
You may be able to read a # off of the other mount.
Several #s are available.

Just a side note...be aware that you will have to realign your coupling after you replace the mounter mounts. And...you should do all 4.

Re: CAL 39 Owners Groups

The mounts are made by a company called “Bushings Inc”. They are DF-xxx series, (dual flex) but I don’t know the exact model number, as it is based on the amount of weight that each individual mount has to carry.

You can find them for sale at various outlets like defender, ,etc. or various engine outlets.

They aren’t the best mounts ever made, but are relatively inexpensive and mostly do the job.

By the way, I have a Cal 39, 1979 MKII which years ago had a Perkins 4-108/ Borg Warner Velvet Drive until I repowered it 8 or 9 years ago. Feel free to ask any questions and I’ll try to answer.

Thanks Bowdrie, now all I need is to find the steel bracket for that mount.

Thanks DougR. I’m certain I’ll need some other pointers. Actually, any idea where I’d source the bracket that sits on the mount? Assuming that would be a Perkins part?

Re: CAL 39 Owners Groups

The mount bracket that bolts to the BW transmission was probably supplied by Borg Warner back when the engine was installed.

Give a call to “Transmission Marine Inc.” in Fort Lauderdale. They can probably help with the flex mount and also the bracket.

Re: CAL 39 Owners Groups

When you call Transmission Marine ( or any other supplier) there are a few dimensions they will need inorder to replace your bracket. These dimensions are:

- flex mount width.....the distance between the mounts from port to starboard..
Normally on this size engine it’s 18.5”, which you can measure fairly easily on the front mounts. If that’s not possible then measure the horizontal distance on the old bracket from the center of the flex mount stud hole to the surface where the bracket bolts to the gearbox. They can calculate from there.

-bracket height above crankshaft centerline.....difficult for you to determine, but again, measure on your existing bracket........the vertical distance from the center of the upper gearbox mounting bolt to the underside of the horizontal arm that the flex mount stud passes thru

- diameter of the hole that the flex mount stud passes thru

With these dimensions they can match your existing bracket.

Re: CAL 39 Owners Groups

There is a web site that deals with Cal 39 information, but it hasn’t been active for a long time. “Cal39.info” You can find owners manuals, etc there.

Re: CAL 39 Owners Groups

I also own a Cal 39 1979. she is old but I love this boat. I have completed many projects on her including;
1) new traveler
2) rebuilt transmission (2021)
3) lighting
4) new ceiling

I am now replacing the fresh water system and the current water tank is a bladder under the starboard bench seat. I would like to know if anyone has done this and where you would put a tank for the new system?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Jack

Re: CAL 39 Owners Groups

The freshwater system in mine was replaced some years ago with a 75 gallon fiberglass tank in the same spot, starboard settee. As it is built in I’m not able to say exactly what the shape is but from what I understood from the person I bought it from it runs laterally almost the length of the settee. Hope this helps.

Re: CAL 39 Owners Groups

My ‘79 MK2 model has a 60-65 gal stainless steel tank under the stb. settee and a plastic 40 gal plastic tank directly under the cockpit aft of the stuffing box.

According to the drawings, there were also options for a tank under the v berth forward.

Re: CAL 39 Owners Groups

Hi,
I’m the (usually) happy owner of a 1980 Cal 39-2 in Vancouver. Here’s a link to upgrades made over the past ten years….

Look forward to any comments.
