OK. So now we'll pull here out of the water, and take a really close look at her. If things aren't too terrifying I'll put my money into the major issues I can address right away and bring her up to Champlain.

Survey. Lifelines. Headsail (used). Tiller Slop. Chase leaks. Bottom Paint/hull refresh.

If I think about it too much I get a little sea sick, but it's an offer I have to consider.

In life you win, or you learn. I'm learning lots about boats. It's lots of fun, fortunately.

Re: CD 25 first boat!

That small CD25 is on the Atom Voyages website as a good offshore boat so if you got it for free that could be a big win!

https://atomvoyages.com/planning/cla...ers-list-html/

Old boats like that can still be very strong.

Maybe post some pictures.....

Most of these old seaworthy full keel sailboats can easily outlast any skipper here on CF. They can be a rough ride in heavy weather but they can usually get you through. If you are older, it can be one hell of a workout especially if you lose some sleep and you'll have to push yourself especially if something breaks at the wrong time and you have to make repairs.

Some folks wouldn't sail this Bristol 27 across a medium size bay but this young guy sailed it over 3/4 the way around the world.

He has it loaded up with electronics and there is even a short wave radio receiver on the bulkhead there in one picture probably for weather reports?

Looks like he recut that mainsail to fit his Bristol 27. The Logo appears to be Catalina 27 or 270. I'm thinking he got it for a good price. He paid $1,000 for the boat.

Re: CD 25 first boat!

Well, after my new friend offered his CD 25 for free, I then had offers me a Pearson 26, and a Contest 25-1. All just too far gone. It has been really fun looking at boats and meeting some interesting people.

In the end, my first boat is a 1970 Morgan 30. The previous owner has had her over 40 years, and is a retired merchant Marine and Navy Sub guy. The boat is old and in need of upgrades, but is remarkable clean for her age. She is very simple. The A4 is removed. She is in Rhode Island, we pick her up Saturday and start working out way down towards NYC and the big turn North up the Hudson. Stoked! All I have is inside pics, the exterior is also very clean and simple.

Re: CD 25 first boat!

Congratulations! A boat with a fine pedigree. Looks beautiful! Simple is a form of strength in my book. If you don't really NEED something on her, forget about it. It's easy to load up a boat, especially a smaller one, with a lot of stuff you don't really need, but need to take care of and find a place for and wire electricity to.

Re: CD 25 first boat!

My first real sailboat was a Cape Dory 25D (a little different than a CD25). I wish I still had it. The guy I sold it to in 1988 still had it in 2015 when I found my new boat in the yard next to it, both getting bottom jobbed and I admit, I felt like I had seen my most favorite old girlfriend.

Re: CD 25 first boat!

Moved the boat from Wakefield RI (Point Judith Pond) to North Hero, Vt. 12 days, mostly solo. My Pop joined me to go through NY harbor, and a friend came onboard for the Champlain Canal and trip up Champlain to the northern end.

She's a project, but functional so we are sailing her and replacing and repairing systems as we go.

I went from Point Judith Pond to Fisher's Island, Old Saybrook, Milford Ct, Little Neck Harbour, Queens, Nyack, Ny, Newburg, Catskill, Troy, Port William, Lock 6, Chipman Point Vt, Button Bay, Vt, North Hero, Vt.

First few days were short as I eased into the trip and did some work along the way. 25 to 30 NM. Towards the end we did 40-50 miles days, trying not to fight too much tide.

The only failure was a shifter control cable on the outboard which cause me to stop for a bit, but I did some work that was needed. Tore out all old plumbing and marine head, and built in a bucket toilet, to be replaced with a composter at some point, but the bucket john works real well for our type of use. Tore out all old wiring and rewired running lights/cabin lights She has no other working instruments other than a compass. Removed and inspected and repaired all sails.

The work will continue as she is old, and everything needs to be replaced or repaired over the next couple seasons, and there is some core rot on the cabin top that I'll likely tackle this off season.

Not sure why the pics came up sideways in the last, here are some from the trip.

Got the family out last weekend for some sailing in good wind. We're stoked!
