Chico 40/42 designed by Gary Mull

Hi All. I own a Chico 42, a Gary Mull design, built by Keith Eade in New Zealand in the late 80’s. She goes by Kookaburra and, yes, I’m aware that I own a NZ boat that’s named after an Australian bird!

Most Chicos were 40’s, mine just has a sugar scoop. The New Zealand Navy still has 3 40’s as far as I can tell. The design is very similar to a Kalik or Concept 40.

I’m interested to talk with anyone who has information or experience with these boats. In particular I’d be interested in knowing more about rudder bearing replacement, and possibly replacement of the original rudders which have an aluminum stock. We sailed Kookaburra to Hawaii from Seattle this summer and I’m thinking I need to assess the rudder and replace bearings before I bring her home next summer (2023).

Kookaburra is a family cruising boat we use primarily in the PNW and British Columbian waters. We‘ve done extensive work to her and love her very much!

Any info is appreciated!

Eli

You might be better off asking questions on crew.org.nz It's a NZ boating forum.

I have walked past the Kookaburra several times and just finally figured out what type of boat it is. Upon doing a search for a Chico 42 I found your post. What a small world.
