Have you ever thought about building yourself a wooden boat? It may take some time but at least its results will be rewarding.

Buying a wooden boat can be cheap....very cheap.
Building a wooden boat can be expensive and, more often than not, you sell it very cheap.

Hi there!

Can anybody clarify if these (Spirit), of these (Fairlie) guys are doing wrong ?

Or they use different know-how?

Re: choosing a wooden boat for cruising the world?

"The hull is constructed from a laminated mahogany backbone and frames, with a layer of Douglas fir strip planking, two layers of mahogany veneers laid at 45 degrees and one layer fore & aft. The entire structure is laminated using West System Epoxy Resin"

as different from a traditionally carvel planked/caulked wooden hull as chalk from cheese

OK.

Still "wood", still "under the fiberglass", but the owner can sleep well thanks to different from "traditional" know-how.

Sounds good!

Particularly for those looking for a "wooden" boat (!)

I didn't see anything in the first website about using GRP to cover the hull - although I may have missed it. The second first builds the hull with strip plank glued together with West System epoxy. This technique petty well saturates the thin strips of wood with epoxy thus making it very resistant to rot. This is VERY different from covering an existing wooden planked hull with GRP and expecting it to last. It won't!

Any of theses boats appear EXTREMELY high maintenance to me. I imagine they each have a small following who don't mind spending much of their lives (or money!) sanding and varnishing.

Add a zero to your budget and it'd put you in negotiable range of a Spirit DH60. ;-) Just saying...

If the definition of cruising is “working on your boat in exotic foreign lands” you will be sure to be cruising with an old wooden boat!
