Cleat location for fenders West Wight Potter 19

I have a 1988 West Wight Potter 19 and am looking for best location to install cleats to get the best vantage point to hang fenders over the side. The boat is excessively wider at its center and the current locations don't quite come in contact properly when tied up to a slip.

I would use a rolling hitch tied back onto the line to tie your fenders. A rolling hitch also makes it easy to adjust the height is is more resistant to slip than two half hitches.

Cleats have a bad habit of snagging things at the worst times. The fewer cleats a boat has to have, the better. You can tie them to the base of stanchions, toe rails or whatever, just not lifelines which puts unnecessary wear on your lifelines.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately my Potter does not have stanchions for a life line and really not much else along either port or starboard side of the boat in the proper locations to hang the fenders. I do have chain plates for the stays but those have proven to not be a good location due to where they mount opposed to the hull. The hull has more of a pumpkinseed design where the center of the boat is dramatically wider than fore or aft. I don't like the additional cleats either but have yet to figure out how else to hang the fenders in the proper locations.

Sounds like you really do need some cleats or something. There are special cleats that won't snag, only when you need them. Or perhaps run a taut length of line parallel to your toerail and tie your fenders whips to that line?

Aerofish, it sounds more to me that you need a variety of fenders, all of which can be hung from fender whips tied to your hand rails on those few occasions you dock.

You might need one or more ball fenders (of a suitable diameter) somewhere towards the bow and towards the stern (see ball fender at: https://www.shipsupplyholland.co.uk/...der-55-cm.html) and perhaps one or two flat fenders at midships (see a flat fender at: https://www.westmarine.com/buy/west-...05_156_001_513).

Apart from choosing the right diameter of ball fender etc, and making up fender whips of the right length, the next problem is where to stow your fenders.

Flat fenders can be handy: they can be used a pads on which to sit; and flat fenders that float are useful to have at hand in case of crew overboard.

A fatter ball fender, fat enough to support your quarter against the dock, might be more troublesome to stow. Choosing one that can be inflated and deflated rapidly, with a pump to match, might be the way to go. I guess it depends how often you have to dock alongside.

We also have a 19' trailer-sailor. We just tie our fenders to the cabin-top handrail with a clove hitch. One is sometimes tied to the jib fairlead on the coaming. 3 fenders seems to do the job.

I too have a Potter 19..I tie my fenders to the grab rails(1 fore 1 midship).
I find 2 fenders per side works well.

Thanks for the welcome. I've been getting the Cruisersforum newsletter by email for a while, yet haven't really began posting anything until now.

Thank you Lake Effect and Farseer as well. Nice to see some Potter owners here! I scrolled through some photos with Potter 19s and noticed the fenders tied off to the hand rails as well. I have tried off to the jib fairleads previously but yes the hand rail midship and fore looks like the typical tie off location.
