Don't blow your whole wad on the boat no matter how good it looks or how much you love it. It is a little hard to find a 32 footer with a good shower, I believe there was a thread about that. I think there could be a number of designs that could fit the bill based on your performance preferences, which will likely be based on your experience. Have you seen the bluewaterboats.org site? People here I am sure are sick of me always singing the praises of the potential value to be found in the glass boats from the early days, but don't rule out boats from the 60s I'd say. I'd also say look to shop closer to where you want to sail. Not sure I really helped you, I think you are hoping for more boat suggestions. I just cant think of a 32 footer I'd recommend that has a shower of the top of my head at the moment!
Don here is one I would say they should at least consider even without a shower (which can easily be added) 1967 Islander 33 Sail Boat For Sale - www.yachtworld.com

Re: Coastal?

Up there you want a stout boat, call it bluewater if you must, but you don't want something lightly built, meant for Florida marina living.
Forget shower, you can rig something in any boat.
Cape Dory, I don't think anyone would fault one of those, or a custom steel boat, but I think with anything custom you had better know boats, cause in my opinion the best and worst boats there are are custom boats, and you need the knowledge to know the difference.
Its why I didn't look at custom boats, cause I knew I don't know enough not to make a mistake

Yep, I completely agree. And you oughta know! That is a lot of boat for the money, though probably not well known. That one looks to be in good shape too.

If it wouldn't cost so much to ship her to my coast I just might have bought her myself.

I know what you mean! Every once in a while one pops up down here, I'll keep an eye out for one for you! There are 2 near me, trunk cabins, in great shape, but not for sale yet! But if I find one you'll have to come down and sail it back up!

Re: Coastal?

Boats are like cars. Most the time the a regular car will do ya even driving up into the mountains or northern Canada. Sometimes things get a little harry, say a little snow or a steep dirt road, and the 4WD is real nice. Then you go up into far northern Canada or Alaska and everything is a dirt road and fording streams with no bridge and no service station for 400mi and then you need the real deal, an old Jeep CJ, Landrover or Landcruiser because even a Subaru or an Audi 4wd just doesn't have the road clearance or durability to make it.

With boats it's like that. If you stay near the beaten path (Caribbean or tropical route around the world), don't make passages off season, pay attention to the weather forecasts and don't get unlucky a coastal cruising boat will work just fine. If you want to go into high latitudes, make passages off season, or go into very sparsely settled areas then you want something more intentionally durable and forgiving of of mistakes.

There isn't one thing you can point at about a boat and say that's what makes it "Bluewater", but a list of things where if you have a majority of the items on the list or even a supermajority then the boat is "Bluewater". And there are probably a few specific design items that would disqualify a boat.

Re: Coastal?

Adelie, I wasn't calling you a twit. Quite the opposite, I was complimenting you on your comments. If that wasn't clear.

I took it as a compliment, that's why I said thanks.

@Adelie is a twitter handle, but I don't twit which is why I used twit as a verb rather than a noun.

The only social media I use is CF and the SailboatDatabase forum where I'm Adelie and the NavList where I use my own name. Yes there's a nautical theme to all my online socializing.

Got it, thanks! And thanks for assisting me with learning something new. I'm not a social media guy either, so the Twitter thing was lost on me until you explained it.

Re: Coastal?

I should have known better, it was an attempt at humor so dry it was almost parched.
