cockpit drain goes out bottom of sailboat

I have a Renken 18 I just got and was wondering if anyone could help explain if it is normal to have the cockpit drain go out the bottom of the sailboat next to the keel.

Thank you in advance for your help.

On most boats they exit at or near the waterline. No idea what's normal for a Renken 18.

Cockpit drains on our boat open under water.

So far from what I can tell from my searching around as long as the 3/4" line is connected between the two holes (cockpit and bottom of boat) it should be ok. It seems counter productive to have a hole in the bottom of the boat, but I guess the water will just balance in the hose line, and force out if I get some in the cockpit.

Right. You'll want to make sure those hose clamps are in good condition.

Does the floor of your cockpit slope forward a bit? That might the reason the designer went with a drain straight down instead of through the transom.

You would want to be sure the hose and clamps are in good condition, natch.

Funny, I think you and I discussed this a few years ago.

Case 1: Is there a through hull? If cockpit connected to outlet via hose, seacocks required. Common on fg boats.

Case 2: No through hull. The hull is formed so that the drains are integral to the hull and cockpit, no seacocks required. Common on metal boats.

This is what I recall. Sound about right?
