Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

Consider the deck and most of the sides in white with an artistic swoop or stripe.

Gets you a flash of color and a distinctive look but keeps the heat build up to a minimum.

No need to get defensive or insulting simply because you obviously have a vanilla boat. And it’s “scratches” as in plural, not “scratch’s” which is possessive.

Me thinks thou dost protest too much....

Another issue beyond scratch's and fading is it makes it easy to see where bulkheads meet the hull. You have to look really closely along the sides to see them on a white boat but on a dark hull they stand out and are much easier to see.

Betting it was wrapped....not a paint job.

Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

This is not a monohull, but they are our neighbors (I'm just too lazy to run out in the rain and take a picture). They had their hull(s) wrapped. The owners tell me the wrap is pretty fragile, but it makes the boat look like it's going fast while sitting at the dock!Click image for larger version

Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

Met these guys in Bermuda several years ago. They were recording artists. The boat was wrapped in Florida a couple months before this photo was taken.

Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

Here are examples of paint jobs which I photographed, also in Bermuda. Not my cup of tea but both made their owners happy. The little yellow junk rigged Vertue class boat is now in New Zealand after having cruised several thousand miles singlehanded since I took the photo.

Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

There was a study years ago in Australia regarding paint colors on aircraft. Some dark-colored aircraft were actually damaged by warping from the heat.
They gave a breakdown of the colors and heat absorbed into the material.

White, being coolest and black hottest, all other colors fall in-between.

Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

Great photos, Orion Jim.

Not that they tempt us to repaint our older, slightly off-white Cape Dory 31, but certainly entertaining.

There's a boat we see now and then in Southwest Harbor, Maine. Green hull on starboard topsides, red on Port. Clever, but probably navigational overkill.

Can a hull be tie dyed?

Cheers. Spring's a-comin. Time to order some bottom paint.

Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

My friend's boat has a red hull. I'm not a lover of red anything, but I have to say she looks really pretty sitting in the water. It's color you either love or hate. I totally surprised my self when I loved it.

Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

There is an old quote attributed to Herreschoff :

"There are only two colors for a proper sailing yacht, white or black and only a damned fool would paint his boat black."

I think Henry Ford also said something like that once.

Re: Coolest paint on a sailboat?

Henry Ford offered “any color so long as it is black”.

We need a smackdown between Ford and Herreschoff!
