Re: Cruise capable, smaller boats?

How does she sail? That would depend on your idea of sailing! Lol
She is not the fastest boat out there, but I never worry about her when the wind comes up!
I have an Islander 28 as well. The Islander sails faster and points better, and although I trailer it, it is too wide! And I cannot step the mast without a crane. More room for extended stays with friends!
Like many have said, it really is a compromise!
BTW I removed the head and holding tank, replaced with composting head. Wish I had done it many years and boats ago! Best move ever!!

Or, the engine that burns 25% less fuel will go 20% further. That is a significant amount of difference when you can't simply refuel on a trip.

Numbers to illustrate the percentages only (consumption and speed just thrown in here):
10knts speed
tank gap 45gal

At a fuel consumption of 2gal/hr @ 10kts that is 225 nm
At a fuel consumption of 2.5gal/hr (25% more) @ 10kts that is 180nm
Interesting discussion.

I am also a current Great Lake Sailor, on the south end of Lake Michigan. Sailing a 1988 O’Day 322.

I am considering retirement in Hawaii (Maui)...no good place to marina a private sailboat here. Thought maybe a trailerable boat that I could put on a mooring, and the ability to haul her out on a trailer when storms or contrary swell was expected...So, am following the thread with interest.

Anyway,I just wanted to point out that you are not going to get 10 knots of speed...motoring or not.

...Maybe on a catamaran or trimaran, but not on a heavy single hull boat.

Good Luck on your search.

Cheers,

Greg
