Question cruising boat req

I read a comment saying "we are selling our current boat (Southerly 37) (which was used to cruise the Atlantic and Med 4-5 years) because we need a different requirement to cruise the south Pacific"
Can you all please enlighten me what those different 'regional' requirements would be?
Thanks in advance for your comments

Re: cruising boat req

The cruisers were now more experienced and know better what they want in a cruising boat. Heading out across the Pacific on a tradewind run you often want more storage, more tankage and more chain.

Re: cruising boat req

Any thing that cruises the Atlantic is quite safe in the southern Pacific,

Off shore compulsory Regs in Australia,
One PFD 1 for every person on Board,
Dedicated bilge Pump, Varies with length of boat,
Manual Bilge Pump,
Epirb, 406,
2 orange flares
2 red flares,
one Parachute Flare,
Bucket for bailing,
Flotation ring,
Seaworthy boat,
VHF,
Boat rego and licence if it has a motor,
One or two other minor things,

They do police these items and do fine you for not having them on board,

Re: cruising boat req

I think Paul L nailed it. I tried to look up the Southerly 37 on sailboatdata.com, and instead found a Southerly 38. Made me wonder if the 37 that you read might have been a typographical error?

The 38 is a fractionally rigged sloop. Perhaps they would rather have a cutter. The 38 has a swing keel. Perhaps they want a conventional keel.

If you are fixed to read what they write, maybe you could query the person who wrote it for clarification. Often, people like to talk about their decisions.
