Cruising yacties - Resident or Non-Resident? (re Australian ATO)

In relation to the Australian Tax system, I would love to hear your experience (so we can learn) about how yachties (live aboards) explain or describe themselves to the ATO in terms of residency. Being away from Australia more than 6 months per year is the easy part ... But what's been your experience of describing that you have a residential home outside of Australia? We're about to retire and enjoy the good life - but being non resident will make a huge difference to the tax we pay on my foreign pension.
