Damage at the boat yard. I feel bad for this boat.

This isn't my boat, I don't know the owner. I do know that the way they installed the furler is trying to take the boat apart though. Plus the foil had about 5 bends in it.

Poor little thing.

Should the furler/forestay be attached to the external chainplate-looking thingy?

Ideally there should be something below the deck connected to the external SS bow plate on the hull so the load is not on the deck only... usually it's a D fitting through bolted internally with the SS acting as a backing plate.

Re: Damage at the boat yard. I feel bad for this boat.

I couldn't find anything about the chainplate (from the outside) that made me think there was something wrong with it (and thus couldn't be used). Someone tried very hard to mess this up...

Inform the boat yard about the issue (if needed in writing / by e-mail) and that it could be a danger to people. It is a danger to the owner of the boat and crew, but also to people near the boat.

Re: Damage at the boat yard. I feel bad for this boat.

My guess would be that the forestay had to come off to accommodate the travel-lift. After the blocking, they found that they couldn't easily re-attach the forestay, so attached it somewhere nearby in a 'good enough for now' fashion.

My yard will do this too, with the expectation that the owner will come by after the blocking and attach everything properly. If the sail is still furled, re-attaching the stay will be a difficult job.

I tend to agree....the furler belongs on that tang....it may be an after market furler put on the boat at some time, but removed during haulout and placed on the eyebolt or fitting that that would have retained the lower end of the original jib..
Those furlers come in several sections for installation purposes, they will look disjointed if the stay is not tight.

Re: Damage at the boat yard. I feel bad for this boat.

In the original post didn't you state that there were about 5 bends in the forestay foil?

Is it possible that the owner may have had some sort of accident out on the water and that's why they had it hauled and they will fix it...

But, with the boat on the hard and the compromised "front end" the halyard should be tied to the tang shown previously so it doesn't rip off and the rig collapses.

With the boat on the hard wind forces are exasperated/amplified on rigs since the boat can not move to the windage aloft.

Re: Damage at the boat yard. I feel bad for this boat.

Yeow....poor foredeck....the labeling on the furling is worn/old, so agree with earlier assumption a potential sailing misadventure may have caused this, possibly not the yard..agree the deck mount should be secured by attachment to the SS tang....just had a temporary forestay installed last season for storm jib....aft of my furling, with foredeck mount secured with 1/2" SS rod thru the bow (solid, 1" fiberglass) and its taking alot less tension/force than this furler.
any idea the model/yr boat??

Re: Damage at the boat yard. I feel bad for this boat.

A guy in my marina came down in a wind storm to find his genoa unfurled. Only it wasn't unfurled, the sail just unwrapped itself, and as he continued to tension the furling line on the winch created something like this. Made a mess of his Swan 49 furler.
