Re: Deck electric winch switch

There are a lot of crap foot swithces on the market, but the ones sold by Maxwell are superior IME. The ones on our boat are approaching 30 years of heavy use and are still working... and they switch the full load of the windlass, ie no solenoid is used.

There are so many variations of winch switches that no-one can give you a concrete answer without more information.

Is your current switch full current or does it control a solenoid.

Is it covered or open

Is it a pneumatic squishy thing on deck to a pressure switch

What diameter are you looking for?

Re: Deck electric winch switch

Just bought the boat so I'll check all that info', but anyway its a Hunter 45 DS original switch so I thought maybe someone will know.
Anyway I believe I'll have to pickup that info in order to be sure to order the right one.
Thanks.

I can agree with the Maxwell statement by Jim and have found mine to be very reliable. I did use a solenoid in my setup, but could have wired it directly.

Re: Deck electric winch switch

If the foot switch actually carries the winch/windlass current, you really need a good switch, as stated above. But if the foot switch control a switching solenoid, then the maximum current is less than 5 amps. Any switch will work electrically. Find one that fits, looks good and is waterproof.

When my fancy Maxwell switch failed a number of years ago, I was in a place where getting a new one was, mildly put, impractical. I found a push-button switch sold for auto horns for $2. Bent a piece of aluminum to hold I in the old switch housing. It’s still working after 15+ years, but I’ve got a real spare if I live long enough and need it.
