Re: Do you feel guilty?

Nope, fine boats are meant to be looked at and appreciated. You can tell an owner “she’s gorgeous” and he’ll get bloated with pride; now, try saying the same thing about his wife..

Treat them both well and lavished with attention. They will respond in-kind

Re: Do you feel guilty?

This thread brings to mind a comment by a sailing buddy years ago. He saw a cartoon of a boy kneeling at the side of his bed saying his prayers.

The caption was, "Please God forgive me. I went out on a powerboat today....and I liked it."

Enfant Du Vent I like your signature line.

But my preference any day would be to "Have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy".

The John Masefield original is actually:
I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;

But I always liked the Spike Milligan version:
I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky;
I left my shoes and socks there - I wonder if they're dry?

Re: Do you feel guilty?

you won't feel true guilt until you own two sailboats and find yourself still looking...

Re: Do you feel guilty?

Actually, from the psychological (as a field of study) perspective, what OP is experiencing is cognitive dissonance, which, as he observed, is resolved in one of two ways: either keep the mind (conform to what we feel we should do) or keep the behavior (break the way we like to think of ourselves). As Carl Rogers noted, it's easier to change through self acceptance...perhaps even just noticing the conflict (which you have obviously done!). And honestly - there is potential for beauty in each direction. It's not an easy spot, and I empathize.

Re: Do you feel guilty?

This is funny. I remember once my 11 y/o nephew asking me, "what do you like most about your boat and what do you like the least?"

As I pondered my response, I found myself starting out, "Well, you see, boats are a lot like women, sometimes the thing you love the most is also the thing you sometimes can't stand..."

Re: Do you feel guilty?

I started out with a wife, three sons, a big house, and a boat. The wife turned nasty with menopause, the three sons turned out to be ingrates, the courts gave the big house to the wife but I got seventeen good years of full time cruising with the boat.

You done the wrong thing mate, just apologize to the boat and move on with life together.

Re: Do you feel guilty?

I have owned 5 serious cruising/ live aboard boats. Most I had for 6-8 yrs. some more some less. I liked them all. Was just time to move on. Try something different. All great experiences and I put tens of thousands of miles on most. Even made money overall on the buying and selling. ( not including maintenance and improvements).
GO FOR IT!

Are you offering that advice to husbands, or are we still talking boats here?

Just wanted to be sure...

Re: Do you feel guilty?

I am " binautical" for geographic reasons. I keep a 52' twin diesel powerboat in the Sea of Cortez and a 34 ft sailboat in Ketchikan, AK. Great combination for winter / summer activity. Full luxury equipment on the powerboat, spartan cruising on the sailboat.

Re: Do you feel guilty?

There's an old saying that nothing beats "home cooking".

Of course, taking the wife out for a nice dinner is always a welcome change of pace.
Oh, and getting together with friends for a potluck can be great fun.

.....and who doesn't secretly love a chinese buffet.
