Elan 45 2001

Hi can anyone give any advise on what these sail boats are like for cruising long distance??

The Elan 45, for a mass production boat, is well built and has stability characteristics that make it a better offshore boat than others: A big B/D ratio for that type of keel and draft, a good overall stability due to that (and beam), a good final stability with a 124ºAVS and a decent 44 STIX.

But you have to take into consideration that we are not talking about a new boat. A 2001 boat will have to be checked up thoroughly, from the standing rig to the seacoks (both should be changed if they have not been already), to the rudder and even verifying if the hull structure and the keel attachments are in perfect conditions.

Than you have the sail's condition and if the boat does not have one (it is not standard) to mount a removable staysail for a storm sail.

Basically, if it is not about if a 2001 Elan 45 (as it is) is an adequate boat to do long range cruising (only by miracle it is) but if it can do that if adequate maintenance is provided and some items added.

HI thanks for that, I was on the boat last week and I'm just waiting for the survey to come back before I make the decision to buy or not

From your description, this is an ex-charter boat. Be careful, very careful...

Loads of engine hours, little equipment etc...
