As an electric lead screw the solution is very challenging you need high power low travel solution. Lead screws are not great at that. Huge gearboxes needed , works ok in bottle screws hard to automate that.

The easiest and cheapest is a simple electro hydraulic system.
Is this due to the effort required to overcome friction under load?

I'm thinking if you want simple and reliable, use an adjustable turnbuckle, or a split backstay with adjusting tackle. This is done all the time.

If two systems were designed to the same quality, I do not see how this would be possible. Linak themselves actually rates the linked product for marine use, though in other applications, and states they believe the product to be 'maintenance free'. A bold claim certainly, but something you would never see for a hydraulic equivalent.

If I wanted simple and reliable I would not have bought a boat

I want reliable with the same or enhanced functionality to what I currently have. Electronics absolutely provide massive gains in reliability when done right, with cars being the most obvious example of this. I understand why electric motors have not yet gathered larger buy in due to range issues, though once solid state batteries come together I will certainly be making the switch.

Frankly I couldn't find the exact one, so I just came up with an extremely fuzzy estimate using the price trend on this website:

And then checked what appears to be a near-direct comparable to the LA37:

Though I readily admit I have no experience or knowledge in actuators, given the price trends from the lower models, it seems extremely unlikely that the actual cost of an LA37 is anywhere near that listed on the site you linked. I have no idea what an electronic actuator would cost with a breaking strength of 15-20k pounds, but it seems like it could be within the realm of possibility.
