Re: Favorite 30'-34' Foot sailboat

If our water north of Tarpon Springs wasn't so skinny I'd have a Bristol Channel Cutter at my dock right now! LOD may be less than 30' but it's LOA is 37'9" and with a LWL of 23'3" plus a displacement of 14,000 lbs it's actually bigger than a lot of 34 footers.

Clearly mine, Sabre 30. I did enjoy sailing a friend's Hanse 345, though.

Re: Favorite 30'-34' Foot sailboat

Depends on what you are going to do, what type of sailing...coastal, off shore, day, or weekends, or long distance cruising.

My favorite was a pacific sea craft 34, cutter rigged yawl. In the range you asked about.

Erica owned and skippered her Crealock 37 for many years, and i sailed that and other pacific sea craft vessels the small Orion 27 was also a well built boat.

Since I was instructing and taking charters on sailing club boats for 25 years, I became familar with many different manufacturers. Many of those are getting pretty old, but we had loads of NEWPORTs that I preferred over the cals, catalinas, hunters and pearsons. That was a while back, and boat designs have improved greatly.

I liked the newport 27, 30 and 33 and 42.

Also, I liked the Ericsons. Actually we were partners in an Ericson /. Olsen 34.....liked its speed and handling. Placed well in longer races incluing first in class. We are not racers but sailed her from Newport Beach over to Catalina often. Actually it had the comfort of an Ericson, with the speed of the Olsen racing hull.

Now all of us will have our personal preferences, and it really does take a prospective buyer, to go on board, do a thorough inspection and take the boat out for a SAILING sea trail. And I mean sailing, trimming and looking at sail shape and condition, running rigging in good shape, and are the winches and sheets correctly positioned, Halyard running, and mainsail slugs sliding, blocks spinning, Place to stow running rigging lines, Check head room, and body length up in the V berth, and quarter berth, or aft cabin.

When we have joined other saling clubs, or we take out bare boat charters it takes an hour and a half to two hours to go thru every system, engine, all pumps, thru hulls operational, fresh water systems , head system, holding tanks, discharge, pump out, radios, GPS, VHF, auto pilot, radio checks, C.D. player, knot meter, depth sounder, electrical wind direction indicator accurate, cushion conditions, safety gear, life jackets, fire extinguisher , not expired, etc.

And that is just below deck. Topside, we haul and flake out the chain and rode, and check that the bitter end is secured, conditon and actual length of rode and chain, and anchor clevis pin moused. Windlass operational, standing rigging, roller furler jib out and in, jib sheets, halyard, reefng lines, and all running rigging, main, reefing system workable, etc, etc.

Engine, and tranny operatiion, engine coolant water, oil, all belts and fluids, etc., etc.

For us, purchasing a boat is a big deal, as is bareboat chartering, and we do spend nearly two hours going thru that vessel port to starboard, bow to stern. Do ohers wish do those types of instpection, no they do not, but that is our procedure, and they have theirs.

We would absolutely make sure that the vessel was up to our specs, and it fit us and we fit it. And would take the vessel out on that sea trial and an independent survey of the entire vessel is an absolute requirement.

And buyer beware, a mistake or oversight can cost thousands and thousands of dollars and actually sometimes, finding you just do not like the boat for what ever reason.

Again, persnal favorites are subject, we all have em, but it is up to the buyer to perform due dilligence and find the proper vessel for themselves. it is going to take a lot of work, generally . Want to stress that here are lots of boats and there and lots of good honest opinions. What counts is yours.
