Fenders..What Do You Use ?

I'm looking for some new fenders for our heavy 55 foot ketch. I've seen some weird and wonderful things being used by inventive sailors out there...without the commercial pricetags.....Anyone got some good ideas ?

How much can you save using things that make the boat look ugly?

Re: Fenders..What Do You Use ?

i use what i have found floating by in san diego--i was able to find many fenders without having to buy any--they appear after the pnw storms rage thru in winter....
otherwise--tires, huge fenders--anything oversized i can find. those cutesie little fenders do no good with a heavy boat...

After years of being nervous every time we were pinned to the dock, we invested in a pair of 30" round Taylor Made. Now it is never an issue. (note: we are on floating docks).

Re: Fenders..What Do You Use ?

I spent 10 bucks on two fenders at the JSI flea market last year, don't forget the pump to blow them back up when they get a little low on air.

I picked up 6 fenders (3 still in plastic) at a boaters swap this year for $140. Not inventive but a good deal.

For inventive I might try some fender boards:

These really help when in tight situations or tied up next to a ferry dock.

I have a steel 41-foot cutter and like my new, bought at a steep discount Polyforms.

But I also follow the "salvage and re-inflate" policy of Zeehag. A prudent sailor keeps his wallet closed in case of rum.
