Fighting with Cape Dory Typhoon winch !

Hello,

Soooo... I am told that you guys are the best so I hope you can help! I just bought a Cape Dory Typhoon and had the brilliant idea to service the winches: open, clean and put them back. Yeah, the thing is that I can't reassemble them properly!!

Attached pics show how the winch was and how it is today - I can't push it all the way down...and I don't know what to do!
They are Gibb England winches.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: Fighting with Cape Dory Typhoon winch !

1)Remove machine screw,

2)Central top part lifts out, (or wriggle out with help from winch handle)

3) Using WD 40 or similar helps down the hole.....wait........two screwdrivers with wooden blocks under bottom edge of winch and pries it upwards. There is nothing to 'ping' out during disassembly but watch out just in case a pawl or spring has come loose,
4) You have to wiggle the drum as some times the fibrous bearing cases swell with various greases and make removal difficult,

5) If the bearing case has swelled they can be machined down in this area so you can re use

Cheers Steve
