Finally Bought a Boat!

At this risk of posting on every sailing forum I'll only share my blog link Rock Steady. I made the purchase of a 1977 Catalina 22 about two months ago. We've (my son and I) sailed in the Biloxi Bay a few times and recently went on a 12 mile sail to Horn Island for an overnighter. It was as fantastic as I've ever dreamed!

Enjoy!

Con grads on your new boat. Your boat is a great platform to have fun and learn. Keep going on those overnight trips!

Re: Finally bought a boat!

I owned a couple of 22 footers, and they really stoked my cruising dreams and kept them alive. It's a good place to start, and then watch out because the dreams will grow.

Re: Finally bought a boat!

My first sailboat was a Santana 21. It was great fun and taught me a great deal about sailing. Enjoy.

If you ever think you'd like to try racing, there is a race to Horn Island every year for catamarans. (someone is usually looking for crew also)

It's called the Horn Island Hop over 4th of July weekend and starts at the Ocean Springs Yacht Club. They have chicken and beer waiting at the Island to enjoy before the 2nd race which is the return. They also usually have a sort of beauty contest where they select a "Miss Horny Island" from the ladies present. Last time I did it there were 44 boats which was in 2005.

The fun thing is that the Sea Breeze is usually up for the return trip and it can get interesting since many boats are running spinnakers. Race 3 is on Sunday around Deer Island.

The also have a race to Ship Island over Memorial Day weekend.

I'm a former member of OSYC and have helped with many a catamaran race. I enjoy the cruising life, though. My son is on the local high school team that is sponsored by the club's non-profit sailing squadron. I'm glad you've been down to participate. It's a jewel!

I've done several of them over the years.

I met Mark E in 1996 in Pensacola. He's a nice guy, and I heard about those races from him but at that time had lots to learn. (and still do)

I lived in Pensacola for quite a while and learned tons about catamaran racing from those folks.

I always enjoyed the old OSYC. I haven't been down since Katrina.

It's a nice, new building. They still put on a great regatta!

Re: Finally bought a boat!

Congratulations. Our C22 taught us how to sail, anchor, race, cruise and overnight on a large lake that we trailered to in summer. In winter we dry sailed off the trailer on SF Bay and the Delta. Wonderful, wonderful "training wheels!" Some folks have kept theirs forever, we moved up to a C25 then our current boat. You will enjoy.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. As you all stated, it's a great starter boat and I plan to use it often!
