Flicka 20 Portlights

Hello,

I have bought a 1978 Pacific Seacraft Flicka 20 and it definitely needs new port lights. Does anyone know the dimension of the big ones in the back or the small front ones? I am from the San Francisco Bay Area and my boat is in Oceanside, CA. The old owner will not respond to my emails and the Flicka owners group has no clue. Is there anyone here that knows? If you do, what port light brand would you suggest? I figure I might as well order them now while I wait for the boat to be shipped up here in a month.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Flicka 20 Portlights

I am not a PS owner but if my memory serves, these were bronze ports from ABI (now defunct). The frames should be in good condition and worthy of a rebuild (glass and gasket). I am guessing that the glass has turned cloudy? Might be able to clean it? Gasket material should be easy to find, I just bought some from Hood for my stainless ports.....
Just a thought.

If you do need new portlights, I would recommend these:

Cheers,
Tom

Also,
The designer of the Flicka is still kicking and living in Florida, perhaps he could give you some insight on some of your questions:

If they look anything like these I’d pull them for refurb rather than replace.

These guys perform just such a service.

Plus it means no modifying of holes in the cabin trunk.

Stumbled upon this blog, might be a good contact/resource:
http://www.flicka20-wookie.com/

Also, Pacific Seacraft is still in business (I think) in North Carolina. Perhaps they would be of assistance:
Pacific Seacraft is the award winning manufacturer of ocean going sailing yachts. The Pacific Seacraft manufacturing facility is located in Washington North Carolina. The company was featured in the book The Worlds Best Sailboats by Ferenc Mate. Paci

Re: Flicka 20 Portlights

Contact PSC in North Carolina, they are doing refits and have all the records. I believe the early ports were from Australia, and I believe the company is gone. The are rebuildable, unless the hinges are worn. Newfound Metal ports are a very good quality port. I installed 10 in my boat, about 12 years ago, and just now, I have to adjust the hinges and dogs, I saw a slight leak from one port.

The Flicka is quite the mini-yacht. Some where kit boats finished by the owner. Very few small boats were built to such standards.

Take a look at https://www.sailnet.com/forums/pacif...placement.html and https://www.sailnet.com/forums/pacif...t-gaskets.html . The original bronze oval ports are easily rebuilt. There are other threads in the forum. The closest currently available ports are https://whitewatermh.com/product/ova...ng-portlights/ .

Re: Flicka 20 Portlights

They are made of black plastic and the frames are completely cracked all the way around them. The window plastic is actually looking very nice, it is just the frames that are falling apart. They are the rectangular kind. I saw s/v Wookie’s blog but his boat is newer so it has different port lights. I will go ahead and give Pacific Seacraft a call and report back.

Thanks again!

Re: Flicka 20 Portlights

Some (many?) Flickas were home finished. Just make sure you get some portlites that are big enough to fill the hole, or ones that you can fit by cutting the hole larger!
Pics of what you have would help.

This is not my sailboat but maybe the picture will be larger. The port lights are identical.

Re: Flicka 20 Portlights

Looks like the two forward ports are different sizes. To my eye, this looks odd and I would definitely make them the same for symmetry. Depending on how much you want to spend, you can have them custom made...........for a price!

The Flickas with bronze ports also have them in two sizes.

Re: Flicka 20 Portlights

Montslr, I guess you got an owner finished Flicka. You need to make measurements. And, if someone is sailing your Flicka to northern Calif., it would be best those were fixed first, or there'll be sea water below.
