Forespar Twistlock Whisker pole how to adjust

Is there a secret to getting these poles to the length you want with the jaws on either end in line? I have one for my Cape Dory 28, it was always collapsing so I bought the replacement lock parts from Forespar and it was still a pain in the rear so I just drilled holes for pins and cut the rubber bits off. I'm racing on someone else's San Juan 30 (extremely casual) and they have the same kind of pole and I hate it but since I am no expert I don't want to tell them to drill it, they know less than I do but twice we have bungled the downwind leg screwing around with the pole and it makes a difference.

Aside from collapsing the biggest problem is getting it to be locked with jaws lined up so it doesn't bind the sheet. Anybody?

A hoseclamp fixed that collapsing problem for me.
Try it, in lieu of any better ideas that someone else may have.
