Say, is the Gozzard 36 the same as the Bayfield 36,
No, but they are similar looking though. They have a lot of the Canadian built boat look and interiors. In thumbnail pictures of the two are hard to tell apart. Bayfields are for the most part older. I think the last ones were 1988. Ted Gozzard designed the Bayfield 40 but didn't design any of the other Bayfields. He then left to start North Castle Marine in 1985 and makes his own label with his sons and family still today. The 36 is now a 37. It's the same LOD but the hull was modified. They now make a 31, 37, 41, 44, and 47 plus a line of trawlers. If you see one at the boat show they are quite amazing. The older ones are a great value. They were all built to order.

Do they go out there with a tape measure?
Mostly they don't, but anyone that works in a marina can eyeball the length pretty close. They might drag out the tape measure if they though you were longer than you said. For the most part you just say what it is in the office and the office people don't go out on the dock. You just can't expect to say it's 24 ft and it actually is 32 ft. Length also includes more beam and it's not hard to tell from a distance if it's close. A 38 vs a 36 might slip by.

According to the Yachtworld listing, Gozzard designed this Bayfield 36, unless "Hayden" Gozzard and "Ted" Gozzard are two different people.

They are different but related. They are brothers.

Well I've put an offer in on a boat and it was verbally accepted, although the P&S is not signed. But it's not the Aloha. It's a "one off" little cutter with a slightly modified full keel. She's somewhere in-between a Bristol Channel Cutter and a Shannon 28. Expensive as hell, but as soon as I saw her, I knew she was the one. The survey is scheduled for Sept. 5th.

Here she is (being sailed as a sloop with the backstay removed):

It works that way more often than not. You won't be winning the ugly boat contest anywhere you go.

Congratulations on acquiring a very pretty boat, Curmudgeon.

H. (Hedley) Ted -and- Hayden Gozzard are indeed brothers. Ted designed all of the Bayfields, excepting the Bayfield 36, which was designed by the younger brother, Hayden, after Ted left to form Gozzard Yachts.

Well, I think she's a pretty boat too, and so does my wife, but my sister finds it far too conservative. She likes the more modern look of the French-designed boats.
