Fractional Jib Furling Question

I have a hanked-on partial jib on a freestanding rig. Any suggestions on converting to furling without buying a new sail?

Re: Fractional Jib Furling Question

Your sail is not cut for good performance partially rolled up. Depends on how much you care about sail shape whether you would be satisfied with something cobbled up, and your personality, I suppose.

Save up till you can get a new sail. You might be able to find a good furler used, though, sometimes people with larger boats with too-lightly constructed furlers up-grade, and sometimes people go back to hank on.

Personal bias here, but I LOVE new sails, too bad they don't happen very often, eh?

Re: Fractional Jib Furling Question

I bought a smaller jib a while back off e bay which had hanks. The sail is insuperb condition and I suspect its off a day keel boat that was used for racing so sails are replaced yearly to stay competitive. Anyway I had a local sailmaker add a furling strip on the luff but also carried it all the way up to were a full sized head would be. That way the furling widget stays in the same place and the sail furls properly. Cost was £80. We don't use it much but its there just in case.
