Frog in the boat.

Has anyone had a frog in the boat on the land in N Florida or USA? My 30-foot sailboat has been on land for 12 months. How did you get the frog out and how did they get in. I have the through-hulls chocked full of ss shavings. Any tips to keep them out would be appreciated. Does it rain frogs in Florida?

Well, I did have a shiny large frog nestled in the tail of the genoa sheet one time. I grabbed it and tossed it in the water. I guess he hopped aboard from the shore. But they could fall down out of a tree onto your boat.

Although your boat was on land, does it have a retractable keel? How high up was it? Within jumping range? If so, no good way to keep them out. Don't know if it 'rains' frogs in FL, maybe sometimes in tornadoes!

However, as mentioned above, some of them eat insects, so might not be all bad. .....Although, they are really noisy little beggars!

Good luck with finding a compatible solution.

Re: Frog in the boat.

I remember hearing a disturbing "croak" once when I was returning my winch handle to it's holder on the mast. ..... this was the call of a NE Florida tree frog that happened to find a snug temporary home in my winch holder.

I left my winch handle out for a term and the tree frog eventually moved on. I didn't disturb him and he didn't disturb me. There's really no reason to consider frogs aboard as a problem.

Other than the fact that they are a food source for snakes and where you get one, you often get the other?

Re: Frog in the boat.

No frogs, but one of the local boats (on a mooring in the middle of the harbor) came up on the net and asked for help with raccoon removal... Got up in the morning and found a young one hiding in a cockpit cubby. Seen iguanas on moored boats, but my first raccoon. Frogs? meh...

I've found a snake on my deck too. A harmless temporary guest that must have crawled aboard while we were at a near shore dock.

I'm far more concerned with insects and rodents than frogs & snakes!

Re: Frog in the boat.

Frogs are normal. When I was last on board, though, I found a medium sized crab (not large enough to eat, but getting there) scurrying about the bilge. There was a tiny bit of leakwater in there, and it was apparently enough to keep him moist enough to remain alive after two months on the hard! He did not seem to have anything available to eat, other than the spiders that attempted to colonize before I pulled Equinox into the yards, but maybe he was on reserves? I tossed him over the side...

The small green tree frogs flatten themselves out and squeeze through an amazingly small hole. They're harmless and unless the noise is bothering you I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: Frog in the boat.

i have had gekkos and iguanas and birdees and wasps--biiig red ones--nasty things, and a snake--cute lil boa.....crawled up my midships line after or during cosme in barra de navidad...we have seen other cats on board in darkness-- got them with a good stream of water---and koatamundi visited from the coco trees in isla navidad.(i guess they wanted a change in diet from cocos. they seem to enjoy rice.)...
i like the gekkos. uncertain of value of iguanas on my boat, especially when i have gekkos, and ...

Re: Frog in the boat.

Find your self an 8 year old to catch it. Keeping the frog will be sufficient payment.

^^^^^^^ WHAT HE SAID IS 100,000% TRUE ^^^^^^^^

However, as I hate snakes, big ones, small ones, live ones, and dead ones - I would be compelled to instantly banish the frog.
