Galley Layout

I am looking at different sailboats in the 40-45 foot range to start by cruising the Caribbean and hopefully to circumnavigate over several years. I am looking at both L-shaped galley vs. a long port side galley. Any thoughts as to which is "better", pros and cons of both would be much appreciated.
It seems that the port side galley has more storage but I have heard a L-shape is easier to use at sea.
With the wealth of experience and knowledge I have read on the forum I am sure everyone has a preference and would like to hear some opinions other than "Any galley is great so long as you are at sea and not stuck on land"
Thanks to everyone.

Re: Galley Layout

L. Sink is closer centerline and drains better on all angles. Better more natural handholds. Don't understand galleys that run the length of a boat. Seems like a bad idea in practical use.

Re: Galley Layout

We spend far more time in our main cabin area than in the galley. I would not want the greater length of the cabin used for the galley, but then people are different. Unlike some people, we don't consider food preparation as entertainment and we prefer simple efficient meals.

I don't think that you can rely on others knowing what might be best for you with this decision.

Re: Galley Layout

Our galley is more U-shaped than L-shaped (Bristol 45.5) and works very well at sea and when anchored (or docked). We looked at a Hylas 44 (?) with a galley inline as well. The Bristol galley is very secure for the cook, we have a fanny strap), and everything is close at hand. Very convenient to pass a drink or plate into the cockpit since you are right at the bottom of companionway steps. Also the cook is completely out of the traffic flow. I am sure one could live with the other arrangement and figure out to how to make it work, but you asked.

Re: Galley Layout

in line galleys are more often found on charter boats where people are cooking/drinking at anchor. Not so good for doing it under way since there is pretty much no way to brace yourself

Re: Galley Layout

You can make either work, using a butt belt. Do look for a railing to hold the cook off the stove.

I have had only L type galleys till this boat, with a U shape. I agree the U is better--you don't have to have a butt belt! Also, one is out of the traffic pattern. I agree the L having the sinks closer to the centerline of the boat makes it better than the "I" configuration.

The butt belt is easy to make, and fitting pad eyes or saddles for it to clip into not difficult, as long as there is timber to accept the wood screws or through bolts.
