Getting Started?

Hi Guys,
Sorry for the broad question but Im sure you'll have some sound advice.

We are a New Zealand family keen to jump right in, buy a yacht and start a liveaboard cruising life. I have sailed some ocean passages as crew and own a small 26' trailer yacht.. am taking some more advanced seamanship (ICC) courses but we as a family crew are still pretty novice.

Soooo.. first off we need to find a yacht (we have a few types in mind), buy it and sail. We would like to start where we buy the yacht so that we allow ourselves plenty of time for day sails and shorter 2-5 day trips to get ourselves confident in our new yacht before leaping into a passage.

QUESTION for ALL

WHEN AND WHERE WOULD YOU BUY AND START ?.. if you were us?

The answer hopefully would be that the starting, and buying point would be in the same location and the when would following immediately after the purchase.. Big Ask I know.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Tim

Hey Tim.. my two cents: Turkey. Lots of well priced yachts, many places to explore, safe and affordable... from there the med opens up to you with all its possibilities.. and beyond.

I would second the Turkey recommendation...

  • Great prices
  • Great cruising (turquoise coast is fabulous)
  • Great marine supplies and services
  • Wonderful people
  • Great starting point to work back to NZ after Med, Africa, Atlantic, Carib, and South Pacific.
