Haliotis 38 info...

Hi folks...

Long time lurker, first time poster...thanks for reading...

I'm looking for any information regarding the sailboat Haliotis 38, built by Yacht Equipment Service (Y.E.S.) in La Rochelle, France. I have done the googling without much success.

The only information I have found is in Spanish, Italian, French. Google translate is great but not so great. As well, all the boats for sale are in Europe...which I am not

All that said, it seems like a boat that might fit my needs :
- centerboard,
- spacious semi-flush deck,
- aft swim/access platform,
- cutter rigged (generally) with bowsprit,
- external chainplates,
- nice interior layout - bright, spacious, good storage -
- and reasonably priced ($50000 - $100000) -

...but I can't find any information about construction, seaworthiness, or a users review which might be helpful.

Any info. would be great to know if you don't mind sharing.

Thanks for your time.

JanP

This:
CHERBOURG PLAISANCE ACTUALITES: L'OCCASION DU MOIS : HALIOTIS 38 DU CHARME A REVENDRE

and there this:

tells you as much about a boat as anything. Contact the owner, ask the questions.

Looks great I must admit.

Sailmonkey... Ha, yes, we've already named our future Haliotis "Morning Breath".

Barnakiel... Thanks for that. I have some learning to do in order to understand that data. Probably a good idea, though.

Cheers,

JP

If you're looking at the one in Indiantown FL, I can tell you that from the outside (and ground level), it looks like new! Fresh Awlgrip paint (old paint wasn't bad) and a bottom strip and barrier coat. Beautiful looking boat!

Re: Haliotis 38 info...

I had an interest in this boat as well, and as I read French I can tell you a few things about it...

The design is by JP Brouns, a Belgian naval architect (now living in France, far away from the sea even...) who has a bit of an unusual take on boat design. He has a website, which you can find here:
Architecture Navale Jean-Pierre Brouns
The site is in French but it has a lot of images that speak for themselves.
If you go to this page and scroll down you will find information about the Haliotis.

navires - Architecture Navale Jean-Pierre Brouns

There exist two versions of this boat. One in GRP built by YES in a few numbers, and meant for strip planking or cold moulding, of which a few were built by amateurs, and one very nice one built here in Switzerland...

In the above site there are links to articles you can download, all in French however. This one you should have a look at though:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/...20LN%20175.pdf
On page 5 it shows how the hull is constructed, complete with info on laminate thickness and weight etc...

Re: Haliotis 38 info...

Thumbsup: Thanks a lot. I found a couple of other articles on that pdf site as well. I have a few friends who speak french so I'll ask them dictate them to me as I drink my morning coffee. There seems to be a large following for the Trismus line as well, which has some similarities...

KVB: I saw that link on yachtworld. She looks great. I'm not in a position to buy right now but I'm refining my huge list of possibilities.

How much time did you spend sailing her? Any notable sailing characteristics? She's pretty small displacement I think but has the benefit of a wide, long keel, albeit shallow...plus centerboard.

funjohnson: I did see that one as well. She also looks in great shape. So far, I've only examples that are in really good shape. They seem very affordable too, but it's hard to know how much work they need without seeing them in person. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks all,

JP

JanE

Our new aluminum 37' is based on the Trismus and designed by JP Brouns too.

The only really odd thing I see on the Haliotis is the completely flat forefoot. Its lower, at the leading edge of the keel, but I'm not sure if it would pound in a seaway.

Re: Haliotis 38 info...

Hi all...

Does anyone out there have any experience sailing other JP Brouns designs?

Matt. It looks like a great project you're getting stuck into. I look forward to following the progress on the blog.

Cheers,

JP

Re: Haliotis 38 info...

I just bought that Haliotis 38 from Giuseppe Tronconi in Italy, I'm very satisfied with sailing performances, seaworthiness, very dry sailboat and both, the external and internal spaces, huge for a 38' sailboat. The centerboard it's very easy to control from the cockpit, maybe (the only negative matter) the engine a robust 29 hp from Perkins it's a bit under-dimensioned (@ 2000 gives 4,8 knots...). The big mainsail and the cutter rig gives a good velocity above 10 knots of real wind. Not so good upwind performances (like every centerboard) but fantastic with angle > 45 degrees with an incredible speed.I sailed 1200 NM from Italy to Turkey and again very satisfied with rough seas (here in Greece during summer Meltemi is blowing every day -25-35 knots.....) I can send you some pics if you are still interested in this fantastic JP Bouns designed sailboat !!
