Re: HALMAN 20 / MIDGET 20 (for bluewater journeying)

A double ender is excellent and less likely to broach. Less room on board though.

For crossing oceans, but not the North Atlantic, it would break the world record for shortest length of boat and it's pretty strong while moderately heavy displacement.

If you have to ask strangers on the internet, you are not even close to being ready to contemplate such extreme challenges.

Same goes for your Typhoon 18 inquiry.

Wow...that was helpful.

Sometimes a little "tough love" is all that's needed.

Energy budget Ahr/d
1. Cabin lights using LEDs. In my experience, on a boat 20 ft. overall, you only need to use the lights for cooking. The rest of the time, you can get around on feel. You soon learn your immediate space, and this is true above decks as well. Moonlit nights are often adequate to your vision needs, and lighting- if needed- is only momentary.

3-10 Fan
12-15 VHF w/ AIS receiver. You may only want this on while asleep, or in traffic zones. You do not have to have it on 24/7.
25. GPS w/ chart plotter. You mostly only need one fix per day, once at sea. You do not have to run this constantly. (In our days of celestial navigation, we once ran a DR [dead reckoning] for 2-1/2 wks, due to overcast.)
2. Handheld GPS w/ maps. Again, doesn't have to be on all the time.
1. Depthsounder You really need it for seeking out anchoring depths, and nice to have on while you are on soundings, but crossing oceans, it's like swimming: if you can float, it really doesn't matter much how deep it is.

However, Adelie's right, you need to plan for it, but don't assume you will have good solaring, every day. Some days will bring rain showers (and you can catch "extra" water), some will bring overcast, and many will be sunny. If you make a wind scoop, you will need the fan less.

As a happy owner of a 19' trailer-sailor, and a sort of fan of micro-cruisers, I've often looked at, even considered 20' Halmans (or 20' Nordics). They look tough, seem to be well-constructed, and look like lifeboats.

I suspect one could go offshore in one. Thing is, the sailor usually malfunctions before the boat. I don't know how much fun or comfortable they would be in open ocean conditions. And sloooow. You can cross an ocean in one, but you can also walk from NY to FL in good hiking shoes. In both cases, the question is: why would you?

We have a Sandpiper 565. Not an offshore boat, though we have crossed Lakes Erie and Ontario in one, and they are rumoured to be capable of crossing the English channel. But they will sail rings around a Halman in light air, which is mainly what we get in the summer.

I'd bet these days, you could find one forgotten in a boatyard somewhere for a song.
Westcoast is full of hippies that just pass on a boat to the next person.
I have seen 3 of these the last 2 years.
One was a Ranger 26, but only 5'6" headroom and I was not ready.
Goes to show that the dream is alive at a moments notice to take on suddenly.

Is the prop on the CAL 30 and the ALBIN VEGA 27 a threat to get pulled off?
I heard some boats have sank from the prop getting snagged on their inboard.

Columbia 26 classic I was thinking. Now I hear it's poor quality overall from the get go/new.

Enough squabbling. Maybe we’ll reopen this thread in a day or so.

Re: HALMAN 20 / MIDGET 20 (for bluewater journeying)

Ah, a good thread to resurrect... I can't remember who it was but I recall a woman sailing a Wilderness 21 in the SHTP (Single Handed Trans Pac race) some years back, so I'd say that qualifies. A friend and I sailed a Signet 20 down the California coast, SF to Channel Islands, and he sailed it back up, at the age of 16! That may be the record for smallest boat and youngest person to do that. But in spite of that I'm not sure I'd take that one to Hawaii. No I'm pretty sure I wouldn't.
