Re: Hard Dodger (Sprayhood) Illustrated Guide - Examples, Tips

Being an architect does not automatically mean that one has a more valid opinion on aesthetics than anyone else. Some architects and naval architects are capable of doing good workmanlike designs but simply have no eye for making them attractive. It has always bewildered me why all sailboats don't have an option of a factory hard or even soft dodger that was designed by the boats designer ( not necessarily a NA) from the inception so integrated into the overall look. Almost all are sold with unprotected cockpits and then the buyer is left to spend thousands on aftermarket canvaswork that may or may not enhance the looks of the boat. It seems to me that the builder is missing out on a revenue stream.

Clock, it is about the money, margins are slim. Drive the price up and sell one less boat, you could be out of buisness.
It is difficult to anticipate all requirements of the end user. That same vessel up here in PNW has needs unrelated to the Bahamas.
I can relate to this being a stainless guy, many builders make have made my life and yours difficult (expensive).

Hard dodgers may not be pretty, but if you sail in places where you get a lot of cold spray, they start looking really beautiful!

Hallberg Rassy Rasmus (IIRC)
With the stock hard windshield or wind screen (a regular or standard feature of the HR boats) WITH a hard Top mated to it.

I think they look nice together, and I like the visibility forward.

Re: Hard Dodger (Sprayhood) Illustrated Guide - Examples, Tips

Here are a couple of pics of my boat.

The problem of the dodger being too high was fixed by lowering the deck under the dodger. However,I do have to sit on the stern deck, rather than a cockpit locker,in order to see over the dodger while using the folding tiller. I don't mind this but some may.

When using the inside steering wheel, you can view the sails thru a large glass hatch in the roof.

When docking,or other reasons, this glass hatch slides open & the wheel helmsman can stand up. A normal adult will be sticking out of the hatch from just above the elbows. Visibility is great.

In practice,I normally sail from the folding tiller & power from the steering wheel. However,at 45deg N, we really appreciate the dodger, especially early & late in the day when it can be quite cool.

Cheers/ Len

Cute pocket cruiser Len. Reminds me of a Gulf 32. What is she?

Re: Hard Dodger (Sprayhood) Illustrated Guide - Examples, Tips

Saw this posted today by HardMusic in another forum on CF. I think it is a good example of a hard dodger, hard top, and full enclosure (clear) on a center cockpit boat. 48' boat.

There is really no reason for a hard dodger not to look good. it just takes a bit more time with paper and pencil before you start building . That aluminum dodger would look a hell of alot better is the side glass had gone to the forward edge. the large blank space between the side glass and the forward edge creates a visual distraction that makes your eye focus on it instead of the dodger as a whole.

Some older Moody boats with hard dodgers, for your viewing pleasure.

I'm very interested in having a hard dodger, and possibly even a hard bimini, on a monohull sailboat. I really don't see the value in NOT having one, other than saving that money for some other function.

I have a Honda S2000 which is a convertible and have the removable hardtop for it. It's FANTASTIC. I also have a Jeep Wrangler and have the removable hardtop for that as well. Cloth roofs are just so delicate and ... temporary. I'd rather go to hardtop and be done with that problem.
