Haul Out Victoria BC

Hi All

I am looking for recommendations for haul out yards on south Vancouver Island, preferably somewhere that lets you do your own work. The boat is in North Saanich.

My wife and I have just bought a terrific 1982 Aloha 34. The boat is in amazing shape, but also has about 20 layers of bottom paint, which I want to strip, then redo the hull with epoxy and new bottom coat.

Any favorite yards?

Thanks!

Steve

Van Isle and Canoe Cove are probably the two most convenient for you.

Do they allow you to work on your own boat?

Re: Haul Out Victoria BC

We had a good experience at Westport Marina, in Sidney, but I would defer to others on this thread.

Maple Bay Marina is also an option, a little Jaunt from North Saanich. I had a great experience there.

Re: Haul Out Victoria BC

I’ve used Westport a couple of times for customers’ boats.(Albatross I, My trimaran has a 28‘ beam, so won’t fit on most lifts). I find Westport’s prices slightly lower and the wait times shorter. They have a good chandlery, washrooms with showers, and let you do you’re own work. They also don’t seem to mind if you stay on the boat overnight. On the other hand, Canoe cove also has a chandlery, many other marine businesses, an Italian restaurant, lets you work on your boat and also has the Stonehouse Pub nearby, though it’s only a 10 minute walk from Westport. I’m not sure about staying aboard at Canoe Cove.

Re: Haul Out Victoria BC

check out the marinas in Anacortes, Wa, we went there to haul out and get some work done, less expensive than B.C. and lots of places to get things.
That was in 2014, even though we are Canadians with a Canadian registered boat, it was worth it to cross the boarder.

Another vote for Westport. The marina is a bit old and beat-up, but the yard is great. Oh, and you can stumble to the Stone house pub in about 10 minutes (did that lots in past summers!).

Seaview in Bellingham lets you do your own work and there is basically nothing you can't get fabricated for you in that town, if you have significant work to do. -- Bass

With all that old bottom paint, I'd look for a place that has a sand blasting facilty, it does cost money but will save folks days of misery.
