Re: Hillerange oven/stove on a TaShiba 31

RhubarbX3, I gave up on getting my 1984 Hillerange oven to work. The thermocouple in the oven would not open to let the gas flow, and the alternative retrofit was so expensive we opted to "bake" using our Magma cockpit grill.

Re: Hillerange oven/stove on a TaShiba 31

We have the original Hillrange on our '85 C&C, but our surveyor broke the knob trying to turn it on. I replaced the knob with a factory original (suremarine.com) and managed to get the valve to turn on but still had no vapor reaching the pilot assembly in the oven. Was told it was a bad thermocouple but by chance (a very lucky one), I noticed (after lighting a top burner as directed) a small flame in the gas line connection at the oven valve under the range top. Turns out someone had disconnected the fuel line to the oven (God knows why) and never reconnected the coupling (hello mr. surveyor?). PO said he never used the oven, so this must have been a potential explosion for many years. Guess we were lucky the valve was frozen shut!

It's an old set up, but we do use our fuel cutoff solenoid religiously. We bake bread and other goodies almost weekly when we're out, which is a fine thing.

In my search for help I found this great resource (where I found the extremely overpriced knob): https://www.suremarineservice.com/si...ove-Repair.pdf

Fair winds and happy baking!

I would like to add a second endorsement for Sure Marine. Excellent source for parts and repair of many brands of older marine stoves, not just the Hillerange.

A few years ago the oven in my Hillerange quite working. Determined that the thermocouple had gone bad and new ones completely unavailable. However Sure Marine would rebuild your old one if you sent it in. One caveat, DO NOT OPEN IT OR TRY TO FIX IT YOURSELF!!!

Not sure what magic lurks inside this devise and the prohibition on opening it really made me curious to look inside........ but I resisted.

By the way, I do have a spare Hillerange I got for parts that does have thermocouple inside that is reported to work but is slightly different than the one in my oven. This is an older model, maybe and 82-83. If anyone needs one let me know.

That's the same on mine, no thermocouples on the top, one in the oven.
Cause that's where the "bomb" would go off.
