Hillerange oven/stove on a TaShiba 31

Propane Stove works but the oven is inoperative & never used since 1986 the knob that turns the gas on is frozen. Any suggestions to get the oven working would be helpful. Thanks.

Many of the older Hillerange stoves I've seen do not have thermocouples.
As a longtime propane user and fan, I strongly recommend you do not use that stove if not fitted with thermocouples.

I have a Hillerange propane stove. How do I tell if it has thermocouples?

Easy way, when you light a burner you have to push the knob in and hold it for a few seconds after the burner lights. This heats the thermocouple which keeps gas flowing to the burner only while the thermocouple is hot. If you release the know too soon the burner goes out.

I had an older Hillerange that had thermocouples in the oven but not on the top burners.

This small vertical thing is the thermocouple sensor. If the flame goes out it turns off the propane so it does not continue to flow.

I have never seen thermocouples on this type of burner which many Hillerange stoves use.

I've surveyed thousands of boats and never seen it.
I'd love to see a photo.

Re: Hillerange oven/stove on a TaShiba 31

I had the same stove/oven.

The burners on top have the electric lighter function, the oven does not. For the oven you need to go below with a long bbq lighter and push and hold the oven knob in, in the light function. Then after at least 30 seconds because you have air in the lines you will be able to light the pilot light, keep holding the knob in for 20-30 seconds for the the system to get hot enough to let you release the knob.

Mine had lighting instructions on the oven door I believe. You can google it and/or call Sure marine in Seattle WA, USA. They bought all the inventory of spare parts and know these units inside out and will guide you over the phone.

I have had two Hillerange propane stoves. The second one, which I purchased in 2005 has thermocouples. The original, new in 1985 did not.

Yup ! Thats it. Thanks for posting that. I knew they'd made some stoves with them but I'd never actually seen one on a Hillerange even in my own RV.
