Re: How to seal plywood dinghy skeg before repainting?

On my dinghy I have a 6' 6" piece of 3/4" x 1/4" aluminum that I bought at a metal supply store and cut to length. They may have had stainless, but I didn't look. I know that if I had needed something they did not carry that I would just have had to wait until I drove through a bigger city to get it. The metal supply I sometimes have gone to in Los Angeles even sells bronze and exotic alloys and is the size of a Costco.

What you are looking for is called Half Oval Stainless. It is available as either solid back or hollow back.
Stainless Steel Rub Rail @ tacomarine.com

It's pretty easy to get a 12 foot length but you'll need to do some searching to find someone willing to cut a length for you.

Maybe Online Metals?

Re: How to seal plywood dinghy skeg before repainting?

Thanks for the tip. I stumbled on the half oval stock myself yesterday. Jamestown Distributors has brass which would look nice for about a month. The stainless stock at taco is probably a better idea, especially since it's pre-drilled. Cutting it will be an issue but it doesn't have to look perfect on the bottom of my dinghy.

Re: How to seal plywood dinghy skeg before repainting?

We have a similar sized dinghy which the previous owner fitted a single trolley wheel by bolting two pieces of plastic or GRP material to the sides of the skeg and bolting the wheel in between. Doesn't seem to alter its rowing ability.

I now wheel it up and down the concrete slipway without damaging the bottom although it does have a 1" stainless steel strip for good measure.
