Info for Transporting boat by truck

I have a Yachtcraft 34 (Islander34) that I want to get transported cross country. Does anyone know the approximate height of an Islander 34? My boat is the "Kit" version of the Islander 34 from the 60's not the 34-2. She has a 4.5ft draft.

Measure from the top of your bow pulpit down to the water, and add 4.5'. That should be your total height, assuming that will be the highest point on your boat for shipping. Everything else, like dodgers, and Bimini should be removed. If you have an arch/davits they might have to be removed to keep it low enough to keep it below limits for height permits.

Dont know about the USA, But here in OZ, Its a maximum height of 4.2 metres from ground to heighest point of load,
Your boat plus just over a metre for the trucks trailer height, Add them together,

with the right trailer you can get the truck trailer height down to 6” or less. Just transported a HR 40 accross the country and the trailer had a well which the keel dropped in that could be hydraulically adjusted. See photo.

Measure your boat! I moved a boat that was to be trucked from Ruskin to California. After the boat was hauled, after the radar arch was removed, the trucker said she was too tall. That FUBAR cost the owner a fair amount of money.

Suggest you contact shipper for the max height and width he can haul. Then measure the boat carefully. Suggest you get written commitment to haul boat of “x” height and “y” length from trucker to avoid problem my customer had.

The OP has not said, but I assume he is shipping a boat FROM a location other than his own, making measurement a long distance affair.

I calculated the height of the standard Islander 34 is approximately 9' 9.5" less pulpit, stanchions and cabin top winches. Given the normal bridge clearance requirements of 14' he should have little problem unless he's in a local place with a low bridge. The information might be needed by the trucking company to calculate the transportation charges.

We trucked Wings with 8' draft up the west coast with a trailer that had a well for the keel, (keel tip was 3" from roadway") and removed all railings and stanchions. Even then the winches barely cleared some structures but it made it. Federal minimum height for interstates is 16ft however some structures are as low as 14. We needed 14' 6" on our route. I've heard of truckers who reduce the tire pressure at a low bridge to gain another 2-3".

Re: Info for Transporting boat by truck

This truck moves houses normally, It goes up and down, and the trailer moves out sideways to be a lot wider, All by Hydraulics,
The centre easily accomodates a keel,

But I did truck my boat 700 miles from NSW to VIC, By truck, Cost $8000-00,
I am 14 feet wide, With Permit,
Maximum normal width on the road here is 8 feet 2 inches wide,
It could only be moved at certain times of the day due to the width,

The PO of my boat moved my boat by truck from the east coast to the west coast of the USA, 3000 miles, approx,
Its first splash in the ocean was San Diego, USA,

Really, that is good enough info. Truck drivers are not stupid, they can tell. Even if it is off by a few inches, it won't matter. You only need to worry if you are at a limit and try to BS the info.
