Installing a PSS Dripless shaft seal

Hi all,

I recently made a post about my Shaft seal leaking and everyone was very helpful. I have now researched and fully understand how to install a new one which I have.

In early Feb I am pulling the yacht out to replace old with new. The biggest challenge seems to be to disconnect the prop shaft from the gearbox. Usefully videos have said never uses a hammer to tap the casting etc.

I have access directly above it is not perfect but workable. Attached are some pics. I was wondering if anyone has disconnected a prop shaft similar to the pictures to offer advice.

Being in Jamaica unfortunately the knowledge base is not as great so want to ensure I am 100% versed prior to pulling the yacht out to ensure I can get all the work done.

Thank you all for any advice as always.

Re: Installing a PSS Dripless shaft seal

Getting the shaft and coupling off of the engine is the easy part, just four bolts.

Getting the coupling off of the shaft is the real fun.

You seem to have gotten lucky here, you’ve got a split coupling. Theoretically you’ll just loosen the bolts on the couple and the shaft will slide out.

It won’t be that easy, but that’s the idea.

Start soaking everything in penetrating oil now.
