Iphone App for color identification

Hello all,

I plan on painting my boot stripe this season. Is there available/can you recommend an Iphone app that could identify and match the existing color?

Thank you.

I would probably use my eyes rather than an app as any app will give you an arcane colour code that won’t match the colours offered by the marine paint provider.

Your current paint will almost certainly have faded from the original so you won’t be trying to match like with like, rather “what it looks like now with what it probably looked like when new”.

Here’s an example of a colour palette that you could use:

Note - if you really want to use an app, one way would be to import a photo of the current colour into a drawing app and then using the “eye dropper” tool to find the colour.
Freeform (free with the latest iOS) will do this for you.

You can't. The color the phone sees is going to be dependent on the lighting conditions, and the white balance the camera adjusts to. It simply will not work.
If there is a piece you can remove(cockpit locker door maybe) then you might be able to take it to a paint store and have it matched. I'm not sure if paint stores that do that type of matching will also sell marine paint. But maybe. Maybe they can tell you the correct base color and tint to use, and you can then take that to another place to have it mixed.

a tip ... when photographing a colour for matching, we always have CMYK and PMS reference colours placed on the same surface in the same light for purposes such as you describe.
If your stripe is "red" then place the branded CMYK card and a couple of close PMS matches for reference. an almost exact colour match is now possible by any custom paint 'tinter'. we also have a small ruler for an indication of size (colour density over area also matters)
paint type + gloss satin matte etc do also make a difference.
under coat and base actually also make a difference to colour projection as well.
it all ultimately depends on whether you are restoring the mona lisa and looking for an invisible match in a 3mm section or a whole or part of a car panel roughly undetectable to naked eye.
The human eye is mostly capable of spotting a microshade and textural difference at 20 feet !!!!
is exact really necessary? often cheaper and better to do the bloody stripe in entirety. most costs are arrival, set up, clean up and departure. The actual paint and time to do the stripe is bugger all. the certainty of dissatisfaction for a detectable colour difference is inevitable and most painters will either charge for this in anticipation or just lie outright. either way you will be paying upfront - guaranteed.

Simplest way is to get an Awlgrip paint chart. That way you can find the closest available color taking into account the fade factor. I'd check multiple points on both sides of the hull. JMHO
