Is bavaria 37 good enough for Atlantic crossing (Can. to BVI)

Hi all,

Was wondering if a Bavaria 37 2006, with standard kit and some extras would be a good vessel to cross the Atlantic from the canaries islands to BVI?. Or if you have any good tips for us..
Thanx a bunch

Regards Romko

perfectly adequate.. Would suggest a good asymmetric on a single line furler..

and a removable stay for a storm sail just in case. Another solution is the French storm bag. The Americans have a similar product. I would take also a good floating anchor.

Look up ARC lists. You will know what sails. Plenty of other makes too.

If you have the desirable skills, if the boat is sound and well prepared, the answer is yes.

People without relevant skills and in poorly prepared inadequate boats cross too. But they take higher risks for whatever reasons they might have.

Fair winds,

On the less "philosophical" vane, some Bavarias seem to suffer in the rigging department. I have seen very many rig failures, sometimes twice at the same point.

So my advice is to pull the stick out, review all fittings, replace all old fittings and rigging. Tune the rig well before the crossing.

Good advice. The truth is that most don't follow the manufacturers indications in what regards rigging maintenance. I have a 7 year old boat and that's the time to make a proper rig inspection. Some insurance companies demand a new rig each 7 years. I mean they don't say nothing but they will not pay, if it breaks, if that is not done.

Many would assume that a 10 year old boat has just a rig in perfect conditions. Maybe yes, maybe not, but not certainly one that I took over the Atlantic without a complete inspection and I mean X rays or that stuff that changes color if a crack is found, even a microscopic one.

Based on my experience, the answer is a qualified "Yes". Qualified because the answer is based on when you intend to go. Summertime, fine. Winter, no. Hurricane season OK but only if you stay alert and close enough to a U.S. port to be able to get in in time. Cautionary note: Some friends of mine started out from the UK on a circumnavigation in one. By the time they arrived on the U.S. East Coast they were looking for a bigger stronger boat.
