Is there a modern day Cal 20 ?

Maybe it has been asked and answered and sorry for the pollution but the Thread Search window doesn't work for me.

Is there a successor to the highly successful Cal 20?

They are very common on the West Coast but virtually uknown in the East.

Beneteau First 20 is nice but rare and expensive, Cape Dory with their full keel are slow, etc....

Capri (Catalina) 22 Been around a long long time. They show up for day rentals, club fleets, etc. Check Yachtworld or CL

Re: Is there a modern day Cal 20 ?

No.

The Cal 20 was specifically designed to be extremely inexpensive to build. It took one day with two workers to build each boat! The factory built and delivered 10 boats per week with two molds and 4 workers.

The factory could easily and accurately predict delivery, so everyone down stream could also accurately schedule space and money and people when needed.

Because of these operational efficiencies throughout the entire value chain, the cost was very low: 20 year olds could and did buy new Cal 20s.

All modern boats are relatively much, much more expensive because every stage in the value chain is much less efficient, so the prices must be dramatically higher. Instead of the cost of the cheapest car (a VW bug), they are the cost of a nice Porsche.

What are you looking to do with the boat? That will affect recommendations.

It is not for me but for a friend who should develop skills before she accompanies me on a long cruise in about a year's time. She lives in NE FL and my own boats are in SoCal.

Having sailed the Cal myself I know that it is as safe as can be for a beginner and can take a blow. Would you believe somebody did a solo TransPac on a Cal 20?

Going to posts 2 and 3, many thanks. I have great memories of the Harbor 20 but it is rarely, if ever, found in FL, same as the Capri 22 which is another good option. The problem with them is that both have very large cockpits that are great for seating lots of people but can get easily swamped and have closed transoms.

Olson 40 eh? Did you know that George used a Cal 20 as the basis for the mold of the Moore 24 that he built with Ron Moore? He told me so himself when I went to Santa Cruz to take delivery of my own Moore 24, later replaced by an Olson 30 etc. ....

Funny thing is George's first boat was a trimaran and now, after many ULDBs I'm finishing with a Tri myself.

Re: Is there a modern day Cal 20 ?

If it's just to get her some training, anything from around 20' - 27' or so should work.

The Cal 20 is actually quite slow with a 282 PHRF.

A full keel Bristol 27, Contessa 26, or a Cape Dory 25, 25D, 27, 28 would work just as well for training and they are faster.

The Cape Dory 22 is rated the same as the Cal 20 at 282

Whose PHRF ?

Boats under 7 meters are better handicapped with the Portsmouth Yardstick anyway.

Then off course cost and ease of handling by a beginner are major points.

Re: Is there a modern day Cal 20 ?

I usually just use the New England site to give me ball park on a boat.

All the boat's I mentioned above are easy to handle for a beginner. Like the Cal 20 they are sloop rigs with tiller steering

A couple Merit 25's have completed the Single Handed Transpac as well and are quite fast with a PHRF of around 170.

There's one of those for sale up here for $2,000 which is what I paid for my Bristol 27.

Re: Is there a modern day Cal 20 ?

Yes, a Merit 25 or a San Juan 24 are nice boats but in that length I much prefer the Olson twins, Moore 24 and Olson 25.
Rare boats to find on the East Coast but frankly nothing even comes close to the ease of handling and the forgiving character of the Cal 20.

The ease of handling and forgiving character would be much better on a Bristol 27, Contessa 26, or Cape Dory 25D over the light weight Cal 20 especially if the breeze and waves get up a bit. Plus those boats are faster

Plus the Contessa 26 is a beautiful boat and girls really like'm! Tania Aebi circumnavigated on one.

J22/70/24? Fast, fun, responsive making them great to learn on. All the controls of a 'big boat', can be 'tuned down' to be quite docile to start. Then tuned up when she gets bored.

Ok, 2nd question:

What's the price range?

Catalina 22, Santana 20, Ranger 22 come to mind.
